My mate with the knowledge of Manchester has said that apprantly that on match days the pubs near the ground and in the quays are totally crammed and charge a fiver to get in!! - can this be confirmed??? The recommendation is to go round Deansgate - it's about a mile away - but should be a far more pleasurable experience Around Picaddily the fuzz often keep trying to move fans closer to the ground...

Couple of pubs charge a quid - the fiver story ain't true - he may have been thinking of car parks?..... If going to Deansgate, you may as well Moon Under the Water it for cheap beer and plenty of room (one of biggest pubs in Europe). My leaving do starts there tomorrow night.....

I've heard that the ones that charge a fiver provide additional 'optional entertainment'

If you are getting into Manchester early (before 11.00) then you should have plenty time to enjoy the ambience around Deansgate before making your way towards Old Trafford I'd suggest Knott Bar which is directly underneath Deansgate Train station - www.beerintheevening.com/pubs/show.shtml/2077/Knott_Bar/Deansgateor the Rain bar www.beerintheevening.com/pubs/show.shtml/1128/Rain_Bar/CastlefieldThe tram stop (at GMEX) is couple of minutes walk from both and if that's too packed then it would be a 20 minute walk down the Chester Road to Old Trafford. You'll be able to see Old Trafford after a couple of minutes so staring straight ahead should help your balance by this point Also, if you need refreshment just after getting off the train, then head to the Waldorf which is on a side street on the left as you head towards Piccadilly Gardens - big screen, food, plenty of bar space & cheap beer. It's definitely a good place to start Hope this helps

The Moon Under the Water would be a good starting point, its a wetherspoons as well, i think, so we can get breakfast there, get a pint in deansgate, then decide what to do. The wetherspoons closest to piccadilly is crap, full of druggies, homeless and elderly chavs, no offence to anyone that drinks in there.

erm whats the plan then Jman?
Moneys tight so it seems foolish to pay to enter a venue where in return we will be allowed to spend our (in my case, hard earned money) on more over priced booze

Sounds good to me apart from the last bit. Cant we leave the pub like we normally do for a Town game i.e 2.57 I mean Old Trafford 's a bit like the Meadow innit?
