I double clicked a piece of software to open it up and then everything stopped working. The hard drive started to make clicking noises. After yanking the power supply out I started the machine again. "Boot up error".
I have a spare disk drive so set that up as master and set the knackered one up as slave. Obviously I must have done something wrong because it booted back off the first disk. The thing is, this time it worked.
I'm sure there are a few PC geniuses in here - is this normal? In the past whenever a hard drive has failed and then not booted back up then that's it dead and burried.

I've got a spare, but I can't believe a HDD which was dead an hour ago is back up and running. I've lost all my passwords etc for outlook / broadband etc so it does decide to give out for good then i'm going to be stuffed business wise for a week or so until Telewest send out my user details again.
I've been very lucky because I hadn't bothered backing up any of my tax records, balance sheets, 5000 odd pictures etc etc. Thankfully i've been given this second chance to pull my finger out and get everything saved on the other disk drive. I'm very very relieved!

I had a hard drive that was dead but would spring to life briefly if left to cool down for 24 hours. Seagate do a nice utility that will scan your drive and report back failing or failed sectors.
One thing is for sure - hard drives are cheap bin it and get yourself a new one.
