If you've seen the recent programme about tracing family trees of the likes of Dave Baddiel, you will have seen how many of the celebrities suddenly found new relatives and dug up some dark secrets from the past.
I am in shock this evening as it turns out my gran had an illegitimate son in 1917. His son and I have made contact this evening. I have two new first cousins.........and even more stunning, one of which lives three miles from me in Leamington.
Totally and utterly gobsmacked.....

After my Grandad died late last year (RIP owd lad) my mum started to trace her family tree and has got quite a way. First thing I learnt was that Grandad had a brother who played for Everton which I never knew. My mum's still looking into it I believe, especially as some of the previous generations had adoptions etc so we don't really all all there is to know. Should be interesting when it's all found out though.

wow about 5 years back some germans made themselve known to my grandma (who still detests Germans after what she went through...) turns out these germans were her first cousens, they came over for a few days etc... and i think my grandma is still in contact with them Also one of my parents best friends (goes back 20+ years) got tracked down by her son, whom she was forced to put up for adoption. Turned out he was raised 5miles away from where my folks live. Needless to say she was and still is over the moon-think he runs marathons Tis certanly a strange experience, my grandma was very disorientated about the whole thing, where as the family friend was knocked for six (and the rest!) never thought of looking up my family tree, my dads side (and family name) are in debretts (sp?) a book of the oldest english families, mums family is scattered mostly in Israel i think

One of my little old auntie's traced our family tree back a couple of hundred years There are some great footie stories down the line as well, like when my Great Uncle played who for Wrexham against my Grandad who was playing for Flint Town. It was a Welsh Cup game and they only met on the pitch once and my Great Uncle absolutely hacked down my grandad and he never went near him again My Dad wrote a bit in the Wrexham leader when they were tracing my great uncle. Some people who we don;t know in Wrexham used to send copies of the newspaper out to their friends who emigrated in the 1960s The people reading the newspaper in Australia were amazed to see the conributor had the same surname as them, and his uncle was their gran's brother! They then contacted the Wrexham Leader and asked to be put in contact with my Dad We were put back in touch with our long lost cousins in Australia, and ended up visiting them a short time later If anyone ever wonders why there are so many Matthias' in Wollongong, then you heard it here first

A gentlemans era... some time in the 1930s just before the war i think pride of place in our front room is the only photo we have of uncle Tom in his full wales kit, which was used in the offical Wrexham History book

I found out that in the 17th century that my clan sent a regiment to Sweden to fight for their King. The far north of Scotland obviously wasn't cold enough for them.

Has anyone got a source for tracking Family Trees?
I was always told by my Grandad that he was related to Thomas Telford over about 4 generations but i never actually checked to prove it.
Probably knew i was gullible but would be interesting to find out for sure.....

I know "Genes Reunited" a site under the umbrella of Friends Reunited" may be some help. Apparently, one of my mother's cousins tracked down her ancestry- and, as my mother's name maiden name was Sims, it turned out that that my maternal grandfather's family originated from Scotland. Unfortunately, anyone who had the information is now dead- apart from my old Auntie who lives in the Telford area, she may know a bit about it. My father was Welsh, born in Lllangollen. I'd like to know more about that side of the family. My father used to say they were farmers, originally- but both my father and his father worked on the Railways. My grandfather was once the Station Master at Gobowen, and my uncle lived and worked at Corwen. My maternal grandmother's family have an Irish connection. So, I'm a complete mish-mash of Celtic races!! Unfortunately, my legs are most definitely the result of Welsh ancestry- short from running up mountains!!! Shrews and Royals- was it exciting, as well as a shock to find you had relatives you didn't know about? It's sad- but even as recently as the early 60's (in more "ordinary" circles, not amongst the models and rock stars of the time) People were forced into situations where they had to keep secrets, because they were pressured by their families, who just couldn't have weathered the social disgrace.

I am slightly dumbstruck Wiggy!
Many questions running through my mind, why didn't we know? My second cousin was going through the family tree recently with us and said Thomas was brother of my Nain, yet he knew of the others. I even asked him why we didn't know of his existance until then? Given both my parents are dead too, why hide it now?
Other things like what do they look like? Are there any family resemblances?
I'm totally thrown by the proximity of one of them too. Have I taught their offspring and met them at parents evening?
Being honest I am confused, suprised, excited, and disappointed at how it's been hidden all at once...if that makes sense!

In my previous incarnation as an Archivist, I spent 10 years helping people do their family trees. It put me off doing mine forever.
You can do a limited amount on the internet, but if you want to do it properly it involves trawling round Archives and Register offices for the facts.
Best case I had was a couple who had travelled to Leeds all the way from Arizona because they had found their surname on a map of Yorkshire and so assumed that their family must have come from there. Their name was "Weir"...

Done a lot of geneology myself, reccomend start with known births, marraiges etc then dig into parish records up by the castle. Oh and if you were born in telford theres no point as your family tree is shaped like a pool cue....
