Crush chaos at Ikea store opening Ikea was founded in Sweden in 1943 Several people were hurt in the crush as thousands flocked to the midnight opening of Ikea's newest store. The shop stayed open for just 30 minutes because of safety fears at the store in Edmonton, north London. Five people were taken to hospital, one with chest pains, and up to 20 suffered from heat exhaustion. Police said the stabbing of a man, in his 20s, near the store at about 0130 GMT was unrelated. He was also taken to hospital where his condition is stable. They must be desperate for furniture in London

Were there loads of special offers?
Why all the clammering isnt there one at Brent anyway?
I do like IKEA except when you go to Wednesbury, pick out what you want and get to the warehouse and see a woman in front loading the last one of what you want onto her trolley, then finding out that they had sold 4 pallets worth and arent gettin any more till the morning!
Nice meatballs though

McKie, there's been one over at Brent Park, NW10, for years now - I used to reluctantly get dragged round it every few months or so, and we'd never end up buying anything. It may have seemed like a nightmare, but it definitely exists. So, I'm not sure about your invitation to join dots.
As for why all the clamour, I think it was to do with the special offers (sofas for £45 and the like) rather than furniture starved North Londoners getting pant-wettingly excited about checking out IKEA's CD towers.
Edmonton is slap bang in the middle of the bleakest corner of North London (Tottenham, Ponders End with grim suburbs all around) so sadly, I'm not overly surprised that there was trouble when it came to people scrambling over who was getting what. Christ, there's enough aggression in IKEA car parks never mind the stores.

Prime time TV the other night consisted of some Cockney ("Handy Andy") knocking together a bit of 4 x 2 Clearly there is nothing better to do in London

I work next door to the Ikea in Bristol, (built on the site of Bristol Rovers old ground).
Breakfasts for £1 are great. for £1.85 you can have a breakfast, a bacon roll, and unlimited coffee.
you'll often find me there.

"Prime time TV the other night consisted of some Cockney ("Handy Andy") knocking together a bit of 4 x 2 Clearly there is nothing better to do in London" Yeah, that'd be why you sat in watching some eejit (I could be wrong, but I don't think he's actually a cockney - I think he might be a North Londoner) knocking together a bit of 4"x"2, whereas this cockney was out and about doing stuff in a world class city with limitless options (and no, it wasn't queuing up to over in Edmonton!

Are you planning on doing any walking around these parts this year?

Yeah, no worries, I wasn't taking it to heart!
On the walking front, yeah, I'm definitely hoping to get up to Shrops at some point this summer. I've discovered a bit of a love of the great outdoors. I love London to bits, but it's great to get away from time-to-time, and wandering along the Regent's canal doesn't have quite the same restorative powers as a spell in the country.
I was just saying to a couple of friends, that even having spent a few months wandering around New Zealand (paradise), I'd still stick the Long Mynd in my top ten places visited last year. Loved it. You're lucky people.
Still, we've got that new IKEA over at Edmonton now, so it's not as if we haven't got beautiful places to spend our weekends. Actually, I'd trade that for spending my Saturdays at the Cottage at the moment - the worst thing about getting home is having to watch the whites again!

Good stuff. If you want some company for a day in the hills please shout up. Any excuse for me to get the walking boots on.
On the footie front it does look a bit depressing for Fulham at the moment, a case of after the honeymoon period for Coleman.
Don't worry too much though, you're going to be safe enough i reckon. There's definately three worse team than yourselves in the Premiership at the moment.

Was in London last night and saw the Greenwich time lazer for the first time - tis quality that, very impressive, especially considering it's just a lazer!

Thanks for that, Jamo; I'll definitely bear your kind offer in mind.
As for Fulham - it seems weird to be moaning after a lifetime of watching us struggle in the lower divisions, but with the players we've got, we really should be doing better or at the very least, playing some decent football. We play with half the team out of position, in a formation that doesn't work, and spend half the game hoofing the ball up front or conceding sloppy goals.
We're definitely safe from relegation, but that's more an indictment on the rest of the division than anything else. The premiership's great when you get a decent game, but otherwise you're paying a lot of money to watch some pretty mediocre stuff. And often worse.
We might not necessarily miss the quality of football, but a lot of us whites really miss the matchday experience of the lower divisions.

Pointing out the behaviour deficiencies of <ahem!> "inner-city residents" is likely to get you a banning from this forum. From the pictures I've seen the IKEA rioters had something in common with footballers who've recently had... erm.. problems with scoring, but only I seem to be able to see it and if one points it out...
