My son says that he wants an Ipod for his birthday. My questions, that I hope the more technically minded members of Shrewsland can help with are:
Is an Ipod a type of MP3 player?
If so, what are the alternative, good value versions?
If I did buy him an alternative, would this add to his opinion of me as being a tight git?
Thanks.

Im afraid the way the world is that an I-pod is more a fashionstatement than a functional device, there are alternatives but im afraid anything else may well be frowned upon....or you could just by the white headphones and he can pretend that hes got an i pod.....

you could test the water by asking him what he'd make of an alternative that was just as good if not better than an ipod.
My folks did this with my sister (16 i think) and she agreed that a creative mp3 player (20gig i think) would be a better present.

tony, get him a mini ipod they are about £99 and about the size of something very small...
it's still an ipod and are probably more desirable at the moment as they've only been out a month or so...

I have an Ipod and find it very easy to use. After a bit of thought - and I'm no computer expert - I even found ways of getting non-compatible files onto it. My main criticism is that when there is a large number of songs on it, the searching for the tracks or albums you want can be a bit tedious.
I haven't tried other MP3 players, so I can't comment on those.

I've got a 20gb 4th Generation iPod. I'd used the creative labs and other large scale MP3 players in the past but none of them compared to the iPod in my opinion.

I've seen the following given good reviews recently.
- Philips HDD070, white earphones, credit card size, 2Gb memory, FM radio, 10 hour battery life.
- Rio Carbon, smaller and lighter than mini i-Pod with more memory (5Gb) and longer (20 hour) battery life.

Other mp3 players on the market (for example those that Davefromalty posted about before) seem to have as good as and if not better features than the ipod.
however they just look so god damn ugly whereas the ipod/ipodmini and ipod shuffle have a certain class about them

Ive got an 1G iPod Shuffle on its way but the main problem with them at the moment is the shipping time, mines not due to be shipped until March 7th! Thought it would be better than an iPod as (as someone else mentioned) it can be tedious to find tracks on an iPod and is a little big and sensitive to be doing vigorous things with. This thing holds 240 tracks and is the size of a bubble gum packet.

the thing i like about my ipod is the range of accesories available, for instance, I have one of those FM transmitters, so I can play it through my car radio. I spend on average 5 hours a day in my car, so having my whole music collection available (over 5000 tracks) all the time is great

There are good alternatives out there. iRiver seem good. It is hard to say if that would be OK. Some people say iPod when they mean any mp3 player, some mean iPod. They aren't cheap but they are very classy, but you pay for it. Best off asking him as you don't want to shell out for something that doesn't suit.

The one problem I found with my Ipod was the headset. The earpieces had a very tinny sound and they didn't hold the sound in that people near you could hear that annoying hiss. I know the white cable is meant to be cool, but I bought a decent headset to go with the Ipod. It may have a black cable but it sounds a lot better.

I work for an apple support company so I'll clear a few things up. The iPod shuffle is different to ther normal iPod because it uses flash memory as opposed to a hard drive, which is why its cheaper and doesn't have the storage capacity. And from experience of selling Apple products when Apple release the product and when they are available are 2 completely different things!!! It will be more like April by the time you get your hands on a shuffle. And if you do get an iPod then please for god sake make sure you have firewire port on your computer!!!! I'm sick of people calling me up and saying they spent £200 on an iPod and can't plug it in, because they havn't checked the connections on their PC or Mac. and without bias the iPod is definately the best personal music player on the market. Best place to get them is www.apple.com/uk I don't sell them or deal with them at all as we only deal with the Mac computers themselves.
