To spice up promotion pushes and relegation fights, perhaps an extra point could be awarded to teams which have a better goal aggregate in the home and away games they play against each other. So, for instance, although we went down away at Darlington, we would still have come away from there with a point. I think it would add another incentive to score goals and mean it less likely that teams will give up - making games better and more exciting, with the prospect that you could still gain an extra point.

It's a nice idea OldhamShrew but I certainly wouldn't want that brought in.
There's something really special and rewarding about seeing a team defend for 90 minutes to then nick a goal away from home to win 1-0. If a new rule was introducedalong your lines and we lost the home tie say by 2-0, then we'd be losing out by winning the away tie.
Also a team could win all of their home games (69 pts in league 2) but lose all their away games by greater margins and end up with only 56 points - doesn't seem fair IMO.

I don't think he's saying dock the team a point for the losing aggregate.
Just the winning team gains a point on their league total.
Doesn't sound bad, would just confuse things a tad.

I'm still getting used to 3 points for a win ;D
I think it is fine as it is. Keep it simple is the best way

Correct, I am not suggesting that a point is docked for a losing aggregate - just an extra point for a winning one and if the aggregate is the same, e.g us v Orient, nothing chamges. I just think it keeps the pot boiling longer and will keep some games competative for longer. To make it more complicated, away goals could count double - but I don't think so.

Then you will have a team that manages to score a few in the first match defending their arse off in the second match. This is nothing that needs to be changed. You win matches and get points. It's beautifully simple the way it is.

i still hate the 3 points for a win system
i think 3 draws are better than 1 win and 2 defeats
how about 5 points for a win and 2 for a draw ? ;D
failing that maybe if the game ends in a draw the team who had the most corners should take the extra point

What about giving a team a bonus point for scoring 5+ goals? There's nothing more boring than watching a top team go a couple ahead and then give up safe in the knowledge they have all the points in the bag.
