really? i would have thought the Mail would be one of her biggest supporters what with all this jingoistic, 'makes me proud to be British' bull- that comes along with 'achievements' such as this...?

She's the Nigel Jemson of the sailing world: moans and complains all the time and divides public opinion. But a winner nonetheless. There's a good article in the Guardian about her today, I think most of the MacArthur bashing comes from the usual sources in the right wing press, such as the Hate Mail. I think her biggest mistake is being so open about the attempt with all the webcams and everything. It's good for her supporters but gives her detractors more ammunition. As for the criticism that she only did it because she had a better boat, what a load of tosh. Someone else will do it faster in a couple of years for the same reason. I hate this country. We can't stand it when we win something and only seem happy when we lose. What a bunch of miserable ****s. The thing i'm upset about is the jobs that will be secured of the back of her selfish success, the 21/2 thousand sailing clubs must be really peed off with people being forced to 'have a go'

Well done on achieving a record, shame it was a record, however, that doesn't really achieve anything.

I've finally managed to beat my record of most socks worn by somebody called Andy with a headache in Belle Vue on a Tuesday. Three. I await my knighthood. What a waste of time and money.

watched the coverage on itv news at half 6, cant belive they put her story on for 15 minutes (half of the programme!) and then had short bulletins on something as small as the chance of peace in the middle east, the bodies of 10 soldiers who died in Iraq being returned home or a suicide bomber killing 20+ people in Iraq, doesnt quite add up to me, surely those 3 stories are more important than her sailing round the world

When I waited for B&Q to deliver me something at home it took 65 days. Therefore, I claim to have beaten this gal

Sky News went way OTT this morning. They must have had a live feed at Falmouth (?) for 20 minutes or so. Well done on her achievements, but surely there was something more newsworthy to concentrate on?

She clearly divides opinion, stainesr was near the mark with the Jemmo analogy She is clearly a brave person, has immense stamina & willpower, and has broken a recognised world record, for which the country and her should be proud If the likes of Beckham can get MBE's, OBE's etc for kicking a ball around, I can see no one can have any objection to her being made a Dame. That said, agree that the media reaction has been OTT, with Sky being the usual main offender (no surprise when they have to keep making the news to fill their daily 24 hour blitzkrieg coverage : . Also can grate sometimes when she does the sobbing routine on webcam as to how difficult it is - what did she expect? If it was easy, everyone would be doing it. Is the excessive media coverage purely because she is a young woman? I don't know but I can't remember this amount of coverage for the likes of Mr Fiennes (you know, the posh double barrelled bloke) coming back from the Poles with half his digits missing due to frostbite and having had to wrestle polar bears (that last bit might be artistic licence on my part ). Must also remember that whilst she was on board alone, and thus only she could sail, carry out repairs etc, she did have a multi-multi-million pound boat, every man & his dog monitoring her from various satellites and websites, a Navy frigate close by for a good part of the journey and a much better weather forecast than you & I get from Shefali (lovely though she is ). What I expect will happen is that either Ellen or another challenger (perhaps the French guy she took the record from) will try for this record again soon - as I understand it, he did not have the weather monitoring she did and it may have cost him that day or so difference - I am sure he wants his record back. In the meantime, hope she has a good rest, she has undoubtedly earned it : however, I also hope I don't have to put up with all sections of the media banging on about it for the next week !

Bearing in mind the amount of publicity that wanabee's get on Big Brother or Pop Idol stuff...Ellen's 15 minutes of fame for sailing around the world single handed is alright by me
