The word great is banded about loosely to a lot of people who dont really deserve it. But I think she really is a true great. What an adventure - personally I just get sea sick in the bath

I don't know how anybody has missed hearing about her, but I can't really see why there is so much fuss.
Someone gives her a good boat and she spends weeks in it on her own (apart from the cameras and satellite links). It is obviously dangerous, so why do it ?

must admit (will probably feel the rath of anyone who disagrees with me here!! ) but i really can't stand MacArthur. i find her really whiny and annoying, and all this sailing round the world malarky pretty stupid and wasteful. what does it achieve exactly?!. in retrospect, i suppose i should be thankful she spends most of her life alone on a yacht in the middle of an ocean then.... well done ellen!

You see footage of her crying, saying "it's so hard", and just wonder why she bothers. Can't believe the coverage she gets, I could not care less what someone is up to in an expensive boat on a trip they chose to undertake.

If we could bottle this womans willpower/determination and feed it to our players promotion would be in the bag already. Why does she do it, same reason as the northpole trekkers and Everest climbers, cos its there to be beat. to single handed sale a "boat" the size of a football pitch is for those of us who admire people such as Ellen something to be admired. As for crying well, she is human, pain has that effect on some of us..

I guess it's that age old think of man (or woman) testing themselves against the natural elements.
MacArthur has always come across to me as a very insular and self centred individual but then i guess you need that type of mindset in order to achieve what she has in her chosen career.
i personally are pretty much in awe of her achievments. Top bird i reackon

To the "why does she bother" brigade.
If something is hard work, a strain...do you not bother to do it? Why does anybody try in the olympics? why does anybody try beating a world record?
If we have 3 games left and 9 points are needed to save us from the conference, do you expect the players to say " its hard work that, we are not gonna do it....fook it"?

oh come on, look past the hype and she's just a female Tony Bullimore; selfish, self-centred, (probably willing to risk endangering the lifes of others) in pursuit of personal egocentric, futile and insignificant aims. she should get a real job.

Why does Ellen MacArthur bother with such things as single handedly sailing around the world ? Because it's a challenge, both physically and mentally, in the same way as people choose to jog some 26miles around city streets, in the same way as people choose to climb Mt Everest or in the same way as we choose to watch The Town play on a Saturday afternoon or Tuesday evening. The girl can whinge and whine as much as she damn well wants, she has earned the right to do just that and we should all be proud of her and her achievments, it's people like her that put the Great in Great Britain. Sail on Ellen, go girl go!! Watching you cross that line will bring goose bumps to me, you're a star and worthy of becoming a Dame in the Queens birthday honours list.

It's not a matter of something being hard, if town won alll three and stayed up, they'd have stayed up, and achieved something meaningful. I personally don't think that sailing a certain type of boat around the world solo slightly faster than it has been done before means an awful lot. It's a personal opinion, but it's mine. Many disagree, I know, but, for me, McArthur is like an Olympic walker. Why bother? There are any number of faster ways to get around the world. Anyway, that said, I've got nothing against her doing it, if that's what she chooses. I simply object to having to hear about it all the time. If I beat my personal record for someone called Andy wearing the most socks in Belle Vue on a Tuesday while having a headache, I'll let you know. I'm getting pretty close.

www.ellenmacarthurtrust.org/Yep, achieving personal goals is very selfish. As for hurting other people, check out the stats for idiots on jet ski's, people being unprepared in boats of all shapes and sizes goin out in waters they don't understand in all weathers with no radios let alone life jackets, There is a massive difference between being singleminded and selfish, take a look at her history... I can't find anything about how many lives she has cost.

Firstly good luck with the challenge Secondly, you say hearing about it all the time..I have to be honest Ive heard/seen about 3 items about her since she started off and I watch the news daily and a few a day. But I hope you enjoy the upcoming hours on her return to the UK. Thirdly, it makes anice change to hear some positive news, instead of the dreadful events in Asia, The on-going events in Iraq, how well the leader of the catholic church is and the usual happy stuff on the news.

Well done to her, she's obtained a personal goal.
However, like others, I'm not too bothered to be honest. It's hardly like anyone of us could take up sailing and try and emulate a 'Hero' in Ellen MacArthur is it?

or indeed the dude that can lift heavy waits using his nipples As for bands, well sim I seemto remember you have a couple that you are willing to sell at "an appropriate" price... Hypocrite A great achievement it has to be said, however surely a large amount of the danger has been taken out of this sort of record attempt, I mean as someone else said, there are are satilites,etc... beamed on her and she had her own control room telling her what to do, planning ahead for her

She's the Nigel Jemson of the sailing world: moans and complains all the time and divides public opinion. But a winner nonetheless.
There's a good article in the Guardian about her today, I think most of the MacArthur bashing comes from the usual sources in the right wing press, such as the Hate Mail.
I think her biggest mistake is being so open about the attempt with all the webcams and everything. It's good for her supporters but gives her detractors more ammunition. As for the criticism that she only did it because she had a better boat, what a load of tosh. Someone else will do it faster in a couple of years for the same reason. I hate this country. We can't stand it when we win something and only seem happy when we lose. What a bunch of miserable c***s.
