Armstrong threw in the word Sundorne, when talking about the Council providing a community stadium. I have been told that such a stadium, is likely to be a poxy 6000 capacity job, and that sly Mr. Fox wants it to go there. They are making a big thing about the Sundorne sports village, in an area that is already well catered for, whereas the south of the town, is where the greater need exists. Interestingly, a Tory councillor has told us that the much heralded Tennis Centre, has gone tits up, and will not now be happening.

Is any one realy shocked bny that statement!
This Sundorn site is rubbish cos when the club consulted with the council over sites at the start of all this it was desided that only 5 options would be considered and the club selected the most viable (see below) so now all of a sudden to stop the move to Otley road Sunsorn becomes an option to the Torys (stupid gits)
1)The Gay Meadow – Physically constrained – Financially non-viable
2) Frankwell Quay – Council states that football stadium would be “unsuitable development” – flooding and access issues.
3) Battlefield - genuinely out of town – use class of Business B1, B2 or B8 not Leisure. 700m away from an ancient monument and a historic battle field – English Heritage would object.
4) Livestock Market Site – Use class of B1, B2 or B8 not Leisure. Council believe this site is highly suitable for a food store in the future. Traffic implications.
5) The New Meadow Site – More suitable than 1-4. Better positions for transport and parking needs. The area has already been compromised by a retail park.

I didn't think they were planning a Stadium at Sundorne at all.
I assume the "Sports Village" is for community use - football, hockey, tennis etc

suppose that would suit Mr Fox well, as it would be the other side of town from his precious Sutton Tory NIMBYs.

The plan is to build an indoor bowling centre and a football pitch with "spectator" facilites - presumably covered seating & terracing - but not to professional standard. I believe the idea is that the pitch would be used for Rugby and important amateur football matches (county cup final etc).
As has been pointed out this is building where there are already facilities - not on the south of the town where facilities are required.
Why Sundorne? Its obvious really - the council already owns the land and not having to purchase a site keeps costs down. It doesn't though keep the travelling costs down for all the Meole Brace, Sutton and Belle Vue residents that might want to use the facilities.
