I'm still learning- so I can't comment about all the finer points. (Fortunately, I sit next to a far more knowledgable lady who's been an active supporter for a long, long time!!)
One thing that's SO different, lately is that it really IS a team effort.
I hope some of them do read this board- because I think that we need to give the lads POSITIVE feedback, as much as we can in these next few crucial weeks.
I have heard, from a very reliable source, that G.P. thinks that the supporters are supporting HIM very well- but that they need to support the players more. We are almost playing into the hands of the opposition and away fans, when a few so-called "supporters" start booing some players just because their THERE at all- before they've put a foot wrong.
Or booing and shouting abuse at the first mistake- which makes it MORE not less, likely they'll make more as their nerve goes.
I know they get paid- and I might have even said so myself and been a bit critical in the past. We do when we've been hurt by our team going down
BUT- I've had a good, long think about it since.
Moaning at matches won't help.
Does it even help if people happen to think that a certain player isn't up to it, and should be replaced- and SHOUTS it out at a match?
What good could that possibly do? If anything, all it does, is to make him feel worse- and discourage the others.
Is he suddenly going to be whisked off and replaced instantaneously by a Premiership-standard player?!!!
I'm making a late New Year resolution and keeping positive! I don't shout negative things at matches, anyway- but I've done my share of maoning on this board and looking on the black side!
I know they get paid- and I've said it myself, so I'm including myself in this critique!!! I should have known better- because I know there's nothing worse than working for people who demoralise you.
How different it is when people take the trouble to appreciate your work. I had an appreciative letter from the parents of one of my little pupils. I only work 6 hours, now- and I'm only part of a "team".
It meant SO much to me that those parents took the trouble to say how much they thought I'd contributed to their son's progress!! Paid or not- We ALL perform better when we know our efforts are appreciated!!
It's no difference with Footballers.
And I've heard things that convince me that they're NOT all just mercenaries. A good proportion of them care deeply.
G.P.- to his credit- believes our team have the potential.
So- let's build them up their confidence.
(I know I moaned like anything last week!I was VERY down. I'm going to have to keep this very positive stance up if the next match isn't as good- so remind me!!! )
Anyone who wants to say "Well, done lads!" Post here- or start another positive thread (even better idea!!!)
