Here's the scenario.
My wife quit her job around 4 months ago. Since then she has been getting small payments every week paid into her bank account. Her statements say it is coming from her old place of work. I'm confused and she thinks it's coming back from the taxman. My question is, does the taxman refund tax paid weekly into your bank account? I don't think they do but it would explain where the money is coming from!

If she left work, then she should be prcoessed as a leaver and issued with a P45. tax adjustments would then normally take place via her weekly pay in a new job, or via a direct single payment from the tax office at the end of the tax year!
Does the company have cash flow issues? maybe they informed the payroll at her old place of work of a rebate and they are staggering it to help their cashflow? Has she had a P45?

The place where she used to work are being very slack about the matter. She still seems to be on their books despite being told she wasn't going back and despite a letter of resignation being handed in. We found that out a couple of days ago because they sent her a letter asking why she had not been attending work (she hasn't been since mid September!). So no, she has not been issued with her P45. Do you have any ideas as to what this payment (around £25 p/w) is?

Sounds as though she is still on their books, they are not paying her a wage as they bring her pay to date each week the system shows a refund is due because she is not earning the amount to exceed the free pay to date figure. Problem comes if your wife has a new job, when the P45 is received the figures will show the pay to date and the tax to date, with earnings from new employment added to P45 figs she will be underpaid tax by the amount they have paid since she left, new employers are probably taxing on a week 1 basis. As in a previous reply , tax is not refunded weekly by the tax office. Hope this all makes sense.

Craig,
Can't remember if you have children. If you do and were receiving Working Tax Credits , there would have been an element of Child Tax Credits as well.
The Child Tax Credits would still be payable. These should then be directly to your bank account now rather than through the employer.
Whatever the situation as other people say it is wrong and you should speak to her employer.

Craig, another option is to give the Inland Revenue helpline a ring, open every day 8am to 8pm. 0845 300 3900 have your good ladys NI number handy. They are very helpful, but dont mention you know me
