fair enough no skin off my nose. If no one wants it, I'll leave it as it is and he'll have to relist it

The biggest scam on ebay at the moment is mobile phones. Though in saying that he does accept paypal so the buyer would be protected if things went wrong.

whats the scam with mobile phones??? Do you ever get emails pretending to be from ebay that ask for your username and ID? When people reply to them then the scammers will more often than not list expensive popular items that will sell. Mobile phones are very popular with the scammers. Take a look at this auction - it's another widespread problem and it catches dozens of people out every single day: cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=15046&item=6363386614&rd=1This is a rather lazy version of the scam and the high bidder is one of many vigilaties (spelling?) who do the job that ebay can't be bothered to do. The problem has calmed down a little but on the run up to christmas i'd guess 1 in 5 phone auctions were being run by scammers / hackers. And it's really bad for genuine sellers too. I was looking at prices for the Nokia 6100 as I had one to sell. I checked out 25 of them that had finished and 20 of them had been won by zero rated bidders and people who had substantial negative ratings (-3, -4 etc). The idea is they pay by a fake western union or with a stolen credit card. You send the phone out and a week later your payment bounces and you are left with nothing.

You send the phone out and a week later your payment bounces and you are left with nothing. i had that, got paid for a phone (180 quid) sent it and two days later it bounced they got all their money back through paypal and i had minus 180 in my balance so they stopped me sending money and all money i recieved went to paypal i rang them up and they didnt give a s**t as usual. luckily they did it to someone else who tracked his and my parcel and stopped them going to the delivery address, while this guy was telling me to give him the special delivery code then he would re pay me, im not that thick you idiot! got the phone sent back to me after alerting the police (again, fraud obviously isnt that important, they didnt care) and re sold it for more. sell your phone by all means but only use paypal if its a user with good feedback and wait a few days before sending the phone if they dont have much, ive sold and bought alot of phones and had that problem and one more where the guy took over a month to send it, they are a real pain in the ass which they wouldnt go on there anyway your doing well for someone who is skint, new phones, england tickets....

I suppose it depends what type of phone you are selling as to whether it's worth getting rid of it on ebay. If it's a recent expensive model then it will attract the scammers. If its worth say £50 then I would have thought you should be safe from them.
There are safeguards you can put in place. You can set your bidder preferences so that it will block bids from people outside of the UK (most scammers I have witnessed have come from Hong Kong and the Netherlands). You can also block people who have a negative feedback rating. Thirdly you can block people who have had 2 unpaid item desputes ruled against them in the past month.
Paypal have recently changed their seller protection policy. In the past if a buyer made a complaint of non receipt and you had sent the item through a trackable means (recorded or special delivery) then Paypal would throw out the case so long as the item had been signed for.
Royal Mail have slightly changed the way they track recorded and special delivery items and now it seems paypal won't accept those methods as being trackable. I am now very wary of selling anything of any major value using paypal because it is so simple for a buyer to make a chargeback even if you have proof you have sent and proof that the item has been delivered.
