I posted the following on the Telford forum this morning. After just watching an extended ITV report on the disaster, I believe even more in trying to do something to help in the appeal.
The response I received from the Telford forum, was broad support, although some had reasons why it was not possible, but for every reason why someone thinks it not possible I have 1 million reasons why it should be possible.
My apologies for the Telford slant...............................
I am sure that no one could not have been affected by the tragic pictures we have seen recently from SE Asia. The images of familes, friends and communities simply wiped out is shocking and distressing.
Many people within the UK have already responded with help and donations. At Willenhall we observed a minutes silence, tomorrow we hold a collection for the relief effort and I am sure many thousands of people from Telford have already given to the appeal.
However, this has been the single largest natural disaster for mankind and I believe the football community should make an even bigger gesture to support the relief effort. I am aware of local football matches already planned and there have been calls on this forum to play such a match. Such a match, I believe should be between the two largest sides in Shropshire namely AFC Telford and Shrewsbury.
I also believe, that costs associated with stewarding, players, officials would be put aside in order to maximise the amount which could be raised for the disaster. I am sure we could fill any stadium with people from Shropshire wishing to attend such a match.
I also believe that, for once football should be secondary and that disspensation is sought from the various league bodies to play this match on a Saturday.
Stocksbridge at home in the Chairmans Cup or playing our rivals Shrewsbury in a game where many thousands of pounds would be raised for the appeal? I think I know which my concscience would go for.
I therefore call upon the Officials of AFC Telford to approach Officials from Shrewsbury Town to try and get such a match arranged.
I am convinced that fans on the B&A forum share our feelings in this matter. Therefore, could I ask that this request is also posted on the B&A site in order that the B&A fans can expedite the request from their side.
Many thanks
