Its just been confirmed on BBC NEWS 24 that the Japanese have donated an amount of $500 million dollars. I think it was America put in $350 million and the British Government £50m. A great response to this unfortunate event

I was under the impression that the US only donated around £20million

to be honest, its not a competition to see who can donate the most. its all about a world pulling together to sort it out.

agreed with somersetshrew, it's not a competition.
However i find it hard to stomach that the US, a country that generates a large proportion of the world's wealth can only put up £18 million.
it's not right....

The USA originally put up $35m which would be about 18-19 mill pounds.
Bush and the administration were heavily criticised in the US and they increased it to $350m about 180-190mill pounds.
It's not a compitition agreed, but if I worked for the Thai government, I'd want as much as possible donated.

I have made a donation to this appeal. it, however was not based on my earnings, not based on my ability to pay. it was just a small gesture to show that I care about what is happening there.
The amount that Nations are donating is irrelevant. the fact that they ARE donating isn't.
