An excellent and insightful article. Only Hurst (because of his previous spell) could have got away for so long with his obvious failure to organise and motivate the team. The warning signs were there before he returned but his previous spell gave us all false hope - I hope his successor somehow is given the funds so that at the very least we can go down fighting and be a force in League 2 next season.

I don’t necessarily equate ‘funds’ with the ability to organise and motivate. ‘Funds’ may buy you quality, but all players require motivation and organisation……even the existing squad can I believe, be motivated and some passion instilled into their performances.

I agree they are not the same thing - I was more thinking along the lines that, in a squad that seems to lack leaders on the pitch, the funds to buy a couple of decent players in the transfer window who could lead by example could well make a big difference.

Spot on. The one thing that a head coach/manager won’t have any control over is the size of the budget, which is why I find managers moaning about the size of their budget rather grating. Even when they are working with a DoF the head coach should be in a position to negotiate the recruitment of a squad they feel it is possible for them to get something out of. Even if they are called head coach, their role is to manage the resources available and get the most of out them. Even if the players are not good enough they can still show spirit and some fight. What is unacceptable for supporters is a team drifting to relegation without a fight and, whether it is fair or not, the head coach is the one that will have to accept responsibility.
