Sorry to hear he's fallen off his perch so relatively young these days. I do wonder if all the stress he, and other sportsmen, put on their body takes it's toll.
RIP

Met him at a'Gentlemens Evening' in Portsmouth mid 90s. Pleasant approachable and engaging. He was physically imposing. Above all a nice bloke. Rip

always gave 100% in everything he did , a rather unlikely combination of a shot putter and budgie breeder. RIP

When I was in the RAF and posted at RAF Wittering between 1977 to 1981 , Geoff Capes was the resident Policeman at the Wittering Police house until 1980 when he was dismissed from the Police Force for going to the 1980 Moscow Olympics.
If I remember correctly the Government at the time had put in place an order that no service members could travel to Russia because of the war with Afghanistan including the the Police etc but Geoff was having none of it and travelled with the Olympic team. It has been said he lost his career and his Police pension I believe.
Nice chap and he loved his budgies......

I was at Wittering just before you and before moving to 1 Squadron, I worked in the General Office. One day, Geoff Capes phoned a young colleague in the office, asking for information about an airman on the base. My colleague rightly wouldn’t give him details over the phone. A short while later, in walked PC Capes who asked for my colleague. He then reached over the counter and lifted him under the arms so that they were face to face and asked him politely for the information he needed.
