Quite frankly I am fed up with The Telegraph printing scare stories every day. They do the same with weather events. The Telegraph seem to be doing their best to trash the economy. If I had a budget to present in a couple of weeks I would actually be wondering if I could bring it forward to stop the wild speculation.

Would seem the government are looking at changing their fiscal rules to create more borrowing for infrastructure projects such as highways, rail and hospitals.
Borrowing of course has its issues but investment in UK infrastructure is desperately needed to aid the economy and productivity. The key issue will be whether the investment can be targeted effectively and actually deliver on the ground projects. Potentially the HS2 could yet be expanded past Birmingham which would be a big step forward for west coast services

Start to balance the books after 14 years and get on with it, without the this COULD happen, that COULD happen from the press. It’s really not as simple as that. If the government either reduces its spending or increases its taxes, this will have a knock on impact on businesses/individuals - businesses close or employ less people, more on benefits etc. People getting taxed more, less money to spend - businesses close etc and so the cycle continues. The economy is a mess and I certainly wouldn’t like to be in charge of trying to fix it.

A lot of the leaks come from the Government. That way they can test reactions to the ideas and if necessary tone them down.
Also always wise to not spook the money market with unwelcome surprises as Liz Truss did.

its quiet on here this afternoon ? maybe its a bit too taxing for people Its a sign that she's grasped the nettle and done what had to be done. The stock market took it in it's strife too. What a mess the Tories left, they had run out of ideas, money and leaders by the time they were put out of their misery.

Popped this link on the observation thread, but useful here too in which some economists review the budget for the Institute for Government, and one of the best updates I've been looking at this afternoon www.youtube.com/live/dVh8dW6x0_I?si=sdQz9tj8TGYxYSi1Think as Giles Wilkes suggests about 20 minutes in the budget is pretty much what you'd expect from a Labour government, and much of the items in the budget have not been a surprise to either the financial markets or the general public. From a local perspective the increased money for adult social care is good news for Council budgets, but its not yet clear where the North West Relief Road sits in the budget especially with the Department of Transport budget being one thats tightened. The wider departmental spending reviews coming up in the next 12 months will also be key for local government The growth figures on the face of it seem a little disappointing, but do seem achievable and the allocation of increased capital expenditure for infrastructure improvements do seem to be where much of the growth will come from. What is clear is that the growth predictions are very narrow and could easily be derailed by wider events, and OCB report does reduce the growth forecast in part due to the likely impact on employment growth as a result of NI contribution increases. However development and research funding for business does remain having been rumoured to be cut, so some employment growth might be delivered through that. From a personal level I'd have liked to have seen more to support green investment, and while the freeze on fuel duty is likely to be welocmed by many, it rather suggests the carbon can issue has been kicked down the road for later consideration

Surely if that was the case tories would have extended it for 5 years and let labour have the task of having to cancel it and upset people Are we really having a dig at the tories for a decision they have not made and can not make , when it's actually a decision labour have made ? The fact the cap was £2 got people talking about it , I think I mentioned it in the forum once as I couldn't believe it was the case , once people talked about it it also created tourism a rise of just a quid now sounds out a bad message , the message is people going to work now have to pay £10 a week more , part time tourists might see it as a 50% hike and stop using it This ranks along side starmer and all his freebies Starmer said he wasn't raising taxes Todays budget saw the biggest tax raises since 1993

You then obviously think making the Postmasters caught up in the Horizon scandal being delayed having the right compensation and not making any provision to pay them was the right thing to do? Infected Blood Scandal, haven't those people suffered enough, yet the Tories delayed compensation even further and no provision to pay them. COVID enquiry delayed so would never report before the General Election. And many more

They haven't done that. Unlike Tories who in a previous election said they wouldn't increase income tax so increased National Insurance instead. You actually prove my point about the infected blood and Post Office scandals. Personally I think it is a National disgrace that affected people haven't been properly compensated already. They have all suffered enough and to prolong their suffering by having to campaign to get compensation is disgusting

Farmers are the big losers of the budget.
Not a huge fan of it but public services needed investment badly so fair play for having the balls to raise taxes, although I would have preferred a rise in income tax so everyone shares the burden not just employers...

The first past the post system is broken, on that at least we can agree, but until a viable alternative comes around the two main parties are going to be swapping benches in Westminster every few years.

If you think in 100 days everything was going to be fixed you are delusional, believe the right wing press or just looking for an argument in my opinion.
Let's take things like football matches for Starmer or Sunak.
One is long term season ticket holder, one turns up pretending he is a fan of a Club as they look like getting promoted. Massive fuss about one being moved for their security yet nothing said about the other freeloading a ticket. The fuss is all about the season ticket holder.
Personally a budget that taxes, tax avoiders (non doms), private schools and private jets sounds reasonable to me.
Former Prime Minister and Press Owners who are affected by this screaming blue murder.... what a shock.
Jury out on National Insurance rises for business. Remember the fuss from the Tories when the minimum wage was introduced and how it would kill business?
Nothing had been said about 2028 and personal tax allowances rising despite it being something the Tories were saying they would do and Labour wouldn't.
Changes I can see with my eyes already is more pot holes in my area have been fixed in the last 3 months than the last 3 years. The massive difference is holes have been fixed by resurfacing the road totally rather than patching them and the holes appear in a few months time

The Sun headline is A kick in the bullocks for farmers. Assuming they mean the new inheritance rules for passing on the farm then, my understanding is, no inheritance tax is payable when property goes to a married partner, no inheritance tax is paid on gifts after 7 years, no inheritance tax is payable on the first million pounds value of the land. They just need to plan, retirement and passing on the farm.
