Reminded of him whilst late night reading about Jimmy Glass.
51 goals in 3 season in the third tier for us from 110 starts,in a team constantly battling relegation.
What a record that was reading it back now. Possibly overlooked when it comes to remembering star players from our (fairly) recent past?

Came back for a second spell with us in the 02/3 relegation season proving that you shouldnt return to where you did well the first time. Only scored a couple that season, not sure if these goals (and appearances) are included in your figures.

Yes would agree that he is a bit of a forgotten name when we discuss players from the past. Great record for a striker who didn't have height but was quick. We had another striker named Stevens who I remember did have the height and scored a few goals. I think it was Gary.

Scored 20 goals for us 1 season in the 80s, so we turned him into a centre half. I never quite got that idea 😏

Today we will be lucky if the whole squad can score 20 between them..

I suppose we had a lot of relatively `big name` strikers around that sort of era but Stevens was reliable and hard-working.

just goes to show its not all about having a prolific goalscorer, Grant Holt proved that theory too
when we finished 3rd in 17/18. Stefan Payne was top scorer with 11 goals, not even in the top 20 for the league
we'd all rather have a guy that bangs 20 in though

Always thought Stevens was quite underrated personally.

Ian Steven's scored the goal that took Town to Wembley against Bristol Rovers at Twerton Park in 1996. A great night to follow Town.
He had also scored the goal in the 1-1 home first leg.

Half a memory but wasn’t his car involved in a robbery, possibly at the Lion Hotel?

Dont know about his car but I seem to remember he was caught with his pants down somewhere when out with some mates in the close season. Anyone remember that, or have more info?

Agree that he's an underrated striker, a goal every other game is a very good record, especially when you consider we were mainly struggling. But he was your old fashioned natural finisher, would love someone like him now.
And there was an off the field incident he was involved in, I can't remember the details but I do recall a few fellow fans referring to him as The Flasher

Not long after cheating Marcus Stewart conned the ref into giving them a penalty, got up and winked at the screaming Town fans. And then had his penalty saved by Eddie the Eagle. That night was only ever surpassed for me by the play off night at MK.

You are bang on about the MK Dons night, what a night that was and another unsung hero in Andy Cooke doing the damage there!

Ian Stevens was absolute quality and I am not sure I am ready for forgive Peter Swan for putting him out of action for ages with an awful challenge. Think he was at Burnley at the time.
