Apparently talking about the atmosphere yesterday, on yesterday’s match thread, is deemed off topic! 😂 explanations on a postcard…
So thought I’d set up a dedicated thread to discuss the atmosphere, or lack off…
There’s no doubt the south stand atmosphere has really dropped off, I think of games like the 1-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday under Steve when it was rocking
Yesterday it was like a crèche, it’s turned in to a new family stand, the football 95% of the time has been diabolical for 12 months, and the club is stale from the top down and on life support. We have nothing to be optimistic about
I’ve always had massive respect to the South stand flags lads and team, and it’s a shame it appears they’ve all but given up, but I can’t blame them at all

We were in block 11. Apart from us and two Newport county lads doing the 92 (who got bored and started singing county songs!?!) It was dead in there. Could hear 9 for most of the game.

It was dreadful yesterday. I was in 12 as bought tickets late and all other standing had sold out. Whole South Stand felt eerily quiet tbh, and it was actually pretty full in there, so can’t blame the attendance.
The only songs were ones being sung in 19 that a few people in the South occasionally joined in with.
Think I’ll be standing in 19 from now on.

18 & 19 were worryingly sparse yesterday and lots of faces missing. The atmosphere was non existent for first half an hour or so, it was hardly great after that but at least there was some singing. I didn't hear much from the south stand, not a dig at them as know a few who try and create an atmosphere.
Let's be honest that it's not a great surprise, the football has been dull for a while, our home form has been dire and we've had a poor start. Add in the fact matchday prices have gone up, it's not going to get people flocking in with a feelgood factor. But a few more performances/results like yesterday will help

As I said in my post which was removed from the match thread, there must be about 40 or so young lads that now crowd around the drum but still expect others to make the atmosphere for them. Not to mention the miserable ****ers at the back who killed off the ‘active support’ as soon as it began last season.

I thought 19 looked dead yesterday Good view from the posh seats, is it invitation only? no , anyone can pay and get a seat all you seem to do is moan at the players, moan at the staff, moan at the owners, moan at the fans, moan at the ground, moan at the moaners , you just moan ( you evencreated this thread to pick on kids supporting the town and moan at me having moved your abusive moan on the match thread ) why do you support our club ? why are you even here ?

Golly went a bit philosophical at the end there! Why am I here? After some thought - Who knows, but I know where I am going on Saturday! Up the Town

Yep, there’s too many people in safe standing who have no intention of contributing to the atmosphere, and it’s slowly killing the atmosphere altogether. There so many other blocks to choose from if you can’t be arsed to support the team.

Hopefully it can be raised at the next supporters Parliament I know many won’t like it but the best thing would be if the younger lads formed an organised ultras style group like most Scottish clubs and Palace have. It’s the sort of thing that can only come from fans themselves though.

If the small group of fans who have led the atmosphere in past seasons have now lost enthusiasm and energy, who can blame them? I have upmost respect for the likes of Justin, the drummer, those familiar faces you see creating an atmosphere home and away, but it shouldn’t be expected of them anymore than anyone else.
It’s also that age old tale of needing something to get behind, it’s been a pretty turbulent last twelve months where we’ve barely won a home game, so it’s no wonder the place is a bit of a morgue.

Hopefully it can be raised at the next supporters Parliament I'll raise it, maybe if we shackle all their ankles together and arm the stewards we could force them to sing

I think there will be various reasons for the drop off, personal reasons amongst what was a young group, poor football over past few years probably the main two. Ultimately it’s up to our fans to make of it what they want it to be. It’s sad to see after such a good result yesterday some can’t just enjoy it, I agree one swallow doesn’t make a spring but isn’t it what lower league football is about? We have seen much worse over the years and this year are huge underdogs given others financial clout. So I’ll be enjoying the wins when they come and hoping enough join us to create that backs to the wall mentality, we will need it. If we ever needed everyone pulling in the same direction it’s now.

Personally I feel the lads (and ladies) in the South Stand may just need to go back to basics with the singing.
Away games generally work with the more creative ones as its a crowd where all singers, whatever their preferred block at home, have to stand/sit together.
But at home, i feel some of the songs are long winded and unknown to most. There is one about Shipley i have never been able to make out and thats sitting in Block 7! Not enough people know it or join and so its mumbled and out shone by the drumming.
There are also some that I feel just dont grab others. For example, when has Taylor Perry put on a show? I couldnt bring myself to join in with a chant like that, it doesnt inspire.
Personally feel the atmosphere would improve if the signing was simplified at home, stick to the classics, the ones everyone can join in with and use the drum to support.
Shoot me down, but thats just my opinion. Anybody trying to create an atmosphere deserves massive credit, i just think to improve it, it could sometimes be a bit more tactically.

no , anyone can pay and get a seat Just out of curiosity how much are the seats without sponsorship? 👍🏻 no idea, me and scooter (both season ticket holders in the west stand) were offered 2 tickets that had been won the previous game by a sov member in the raffle the raffle is £10 a go and you get an envelope with either 2 upcoming match tickets printed on them or nothing, you also get 3 golden gamble style tickets for minor prizes drawn at half time we both had a go on sat and both lost so likely back into block 17 for Charlton ( I do remember someone asking at a recent meeting if they could clarify a price for a season ticket holder to upgrade to the sov for the occasional game but cant remember the outcome ) ps there is a strict dress code, no club colours, no shorts , no trainers

Might sound odd but most of the singers probably prioritised getting Oasis tickets. Even at the ground I noticed a lot of people with there phones out and it appeared they were in the queue for tickets.
The SouthStand atmosphere has always been largely down to a dozen or so fans who moved from block 19. They are the ones that start and sustain the chants. They did not appear to be there on Saturday. It's not easy getting chants going or having the balls to do it if its not something you have done before.
I believe a fair few of the block 19 regulars are banned. Also a there are pockets of mates that go into block 19 that are no longer regular (my friends group included). Lots of people give block 19 s**t, claiming they were all just thugs who spent the whole game staring at the opposition. Funny how they are missed when they are gone.
Salop have always had a decent atmosphere with a variety of songs that backed the team come rain or shine. It is a real shame its got to the stage it has as it is one of my favourite aspects of the day.

I'd hoped I'd be informing everybody in a better way than this, but yes we will be disbanding as a group. It's been coming over the past 9 months and after a few games this season I've realised that, as effectively the last member of the original group left, I don't have the time and energy for it any more. There is absolutely nothing wrong with any of the posts on this thread and I certainly don't take any offence to anything that has been posted.
