Some interesting newcomers to the senior England squad for the Nations League games against Republic of Ireland and Finland - Angel Gomes, Livramento, Madueke and Gibbs-White. Unsurprisingly all have played for Carsley before in the U21 team but Gomes is the least well known even though he is ex-Man United as he plays for Lille. Livramento is a very quick wingback while Madueke and Gibbs-White have both started the Premier League season very well. The most interesting omission is Kyle Walker - I did not think he had the greatest tournament at the Euros but he was the only Englishman in UEFAs team of the tournament- presumably Carsley thinks that at 34 the next World Cup will be beyond him. I wish Carsley all the best - a very useful, hard-working player in his time who has done really well with coaching the Under 21s. If he does really well he will obviously come into contention for the full-time job though I think the FA are deliberately keeping their options open and would really love to have Pep Guardiola in charge if the situation at Man City goes pear-shaped when their charges are finally heard.

I also wish him all the best. He deserves his chance and he has beaten Spain in the final of an international tournament!! Not many managers can say that!!

I don't know if it's because I'm becoming more detached from football or just a sign of my age (possibly both) but I saw the squad announced and had never heard of several of the players. But I like the fact he's giving younger players an opportunity, the likes of Trippier and Walker should be a thing of the past
