I think a combination of the governments tough response and the public backlash in coming out in. Large numbers seems to have resulted in the riots fizzling out. I have no issues with them been sent to prison. As long as any other protests that turn violent or damage property are also given tough sentences. .
However I would also like the government to be more open to the concerns of all our community's whatever there faith and culture, whilst Britain is a multicultural country , we seem to be a very divided country with issues around social cohesion. When country's are in a ressession and poverty is on the rise then it can become a breeding ground for discontentment which the far right and extreme islamists can exploit.
Untill tony Blair came to power the UK had a yearly intakeof 50,000 immigrants, when you see a huge increase to the levels we have had for some time it is not sustainable.
We need to the government develop a more integrated and sustainable immigration policy and a more humane and speedy process for asylum seekers

With the extra pressure on our prisons this could be an ideal opportunity to utilise Bibby Stockolm.

Many years ago when I left the forces I went on a Prison Officer's aquaint course it was a job I thought might be for me. I went to three prisons an open prison a young offenders and an old victoriana H wing. It changed my perception of prisons but not in the way you may think. The longest sentences were being served by the prison officers themselves. The abuse, hours of work, and general working conditions were horrendous. The recent Prisoner/Prison Officer's liaison that has been in the press has surprised me. The general feeling I had when I was considering the job was rehabilitation was what the press was told, but keep the filth of the street was the actual aim. Our sentencing system is broken as behind every conviction is an appeal. The fact is little Johnny threw the brick because Daddy is on remand

The fact is little Johnny threw the brick because Daddy is on remand Exactly the experience of my granddaughters partner, an idealistic young man who thought he could do a good job rehabilitating young offenders. Instead he found a regime that relied on bullying and intimidation and the job was to keep the inmates subdued and locked away.

I think the prisons are one of many examples of under investment in key infrastructure over the last 10 years which are now really coming home to roost
A tough on crime and heavy sentences is part of the picture but around 20 major prisons were closed in the last decade and not replaced, and the same happened with courts too, and of course police numbers also fell. It’s an easy win for politicians to call for tough sentences as the conservatives did and Labour are now doing. But that needs backing up with major investment in all aspects of the justice system - including probation and reform services. I read 70% of those convicted in the recent riots have prior convictions so discussions around stopping reoffending are important too
The ex MP Rory Stewart has written about it in his autobiography which is an interesting read too
