Outrageous, though I suppose all the entertainment outlets are similar.
Highlights: Huw Edwards got a rise of £40000! People on the radio, which sponges off the TV licence money to exist, were often earning upwards of £250000.

A 'rise' of £40k. ***k me. Most of us wont get a rise of £400 a year.
Obscene.

These articles always amuse me, we have a remarkable culture in the UK of trying to bring down anyone who's on a good wage. They'd get that on the open market, the BBC aren't just giving them pay rises for the sake of it.
You could argue whether they are worth the money. Don't hate the player though, hate the game.

Fair enough within limits. But the person reading the news is earning more than the Prime Minister making the news?

Would be interested to compare the wages with presenters on commercial channels like Ant and Dec; Chris Evans at Virgin Radio; Kay Burley at Sky etc to see how they compare. Overall I'd say these seem like industry standards, but much as I like him as a person and he's a good presenter the wages for Lineker do seem a bit high for what he does and the ratings that Match of the Day gets now. Where as prsenters like Jonathan Agnew on Test Match Special are doing 8 hour days and reporting and writing columns about their sport all year round, Lineker isn't really on for that long to justify the big wage.

The BBC pays the market rate for on air ‘talent’, it has to watch the pennies these days and pays as low as it can get away with.
The talent will make their reputations with the Beeb but once established will be looking for more from the commercial operators.
My daughter had a 12 month contract as a researcher at Media City and loved working there, apart from the paranoia about ‘balance’ and having to have all her work carefully scrutinised to avoid upsetting the politicians.
She left for significantly higher pay doing a similar job for BT. She found BT to be a shambles compared with the BBC, badly managed and wasteful. She didn’tstay long,
On the licence fee, I think it’s wrong to think of it as a TV licence. I watch very little BBC tv but I listen to several hours of radio a day plus using their website. The licence fee is terrific value compared to what the streamers charge.

Also agreed, the PM should be on a lot more money but imagine selling that to the public.

Also agreed, the PM should be on a lot more money but imagine selling that to the public. The PM’s wages are always a little misleading for comparisons as they continue to receive a six figure life time income after leaving office - even if there for a few weeks, and can earn significant sums from lectures, directorships etc post their time in politics.

How on earth is Shearer paid £380k for his comments on games, when Nick Robinson is paid less for interviewing PMs etc and fronting news & politics programmes?

How much do they pay Steve Rosenberg for reporting from Russia and how does he manage to steer clear of being arrested on some trumped up charge?
