Played Rhyl a couple of times during my time of watching the games.

First time for me was December 82. Went up on Smithys half full coach in a huge rainstorm, not really looking forward to standing outside getting soaked for 90 minutes. Didnt need to worry, as we pulled up outside the ground the floodlights were switched off. Game postponed till the following week.....🙄

Back up the following week the pitch was turning white with frost as we kicked off. Town struggled and there was very little of interest to help keep warm, I resorted to running up and down the touchline with the subs to try and keep warm. Possibly the coldest I've ever been watching the Town. Alan Brown scored our only goal from the penalty spot in a fortunate 1-1 draw. Rhyl piled the pressure on in the last few minutes we were very lucky to hold out. Won the replay the following week just a few days before Christmas 3-0

Only other time I went there was Febryary 85 on the way to winning the cup for the last time. Struggling again and 1-1 with about 10 mins to go we finally got in front. Rhyl collapsed and we scored another 5 goals in thise final minutes to run out 'comfortable' 7-1 winners.

A couple of memories

Home games at the Meadow - normally in front of a couple of thousand. Remember a tasty tie with Oswestry where they bought a few 'boys'. Beating Wrexham.

Cefn Albion - believe 10-1.

Away games at Caernarfon - Against Llanfairpwll and Caernarfon. Aroun d the time of Ken Brown/ Ian McNeill. Think Moyes scored in one.

Welsh Cup Final 2nd Leg at Farrar Road, Bangor. The coach back which did a detour via Llandudno and Rhyl (Chris Smith was picking up some programmes).

And this story:

Newport v Shrewsbury - 1980 WCF - 1st Leg.

My Grandad (Eddie Plimmer) was on the ground staff for many years. Turnstile Operator on the Wing Stand (later Station Stand).

The club laid on a coach for club staff. My Grandad asked my Nan if she wanted to go.

"Who are playing" Nan asked. "Newport" stated my Grandad.

So my Nan joined my Grandad on the coach.

After a while Nan noticed that the coach was heading down the A49.

"This is strange" she thought. "The coach is going the wrong way".

"Eddie - isn't the coach going the wrong".

"No, this is the right way to Newport".

"It can't be, Newport is by Telford".

"No. This is Newport - South Wales!".

I'm told my Nan didn't speak to my Grandad much on the journey down, at the match, and the journey back. Getting back to Shrewsbury after midnight. It always brought a chuckle when mentioned at family gatherings.

Yes id forgotten about the detour going to Bangor for Smithy to pick up his programmes....

The away games at Caernarfon - I managed to get time off work to go and watch the Llanfair PG game. Told the boss I was going to watch Shrewsbury at Caernarfon and he took the P when we only won by (I think it was) 1-0 (didnt let on it was against Llanfair).
I then had to ask for another day off when we drew Caernarfon themselves...... Then he REALLY took the P when I had to admit the last round was actually against a village team. 😏
You can always rely on Shrewsbury to make you the laughing stock cant you.

Some really great stories, thanks for sharing, brings back many memories.

It was a sad day when all the FL clubs were no longer allowed to compete in the competition. For my hometown club, Towyn FC (as was) the prospect of a run in the cup and drawing a league club was something we all dreamed about at the start of the season. One year we did progress to the later stages and drew Hereford Utd at home. The club accepted the financial offer to switch the tie to Edgar Street and the money we made kept us afloat for a few seasons.

As for the result?

Sadly we were outplayed and lost 8-0.

Our best cup run was in 1984/85.

We reached the 4th round when all the FL clubs entered, rubbed our hands in anticipation but ended up playing Lex XI at home. Won though and thought we must get a league club next round, no chance, quarter finals, ended up with Bangor City away on a Wednesday evening and got stuffed 6-1.

And that sadly was the end of the fairytale, the club folded not long after.

Just sorry that Chirk aaa's never got to play Shrewsbury in Welsh cup,would of loved that....but did get to play Oswestry away,and won 4-1( the days of Dixie McNeil and Alan Dwyer at Chirk,and a few other very good players.....and lo and behold,the next round we drew wrexsham away,took the lead,but eventually lost 4-1.....great times 1984/5 me thinks
