I have many relatives in the States, most dislike him with a passion but some want him re-elected but the general feeling is that if he does win, America can kiss goodbye to democracy as they know it.

If someone assassinated Putin? Voted in with a landslide majority but his opponents would question how democratic. Trumps supporters also questioned democracy and tried to overthrow the election result. How about Hitler, voted in democratically but assassination would have now been looked at as a good dead. Not sure I agree with your blanket let the people decide in extreme circumstance and Trumps extremities are unknown. He’s a dangerous man but just how dangerous? First thing he’d do is abolish the 2 term presidency rule, just like Putin did. Hitler wasn’t elected, he was appointed chancellor by Hindernberg. He never won power or even a majority in the Reichstag until the Reichstag Fire allowed him to form a solid coalition with the catholic right. Trump also isn’t Putin. But the NSDAP ( Nazis) did have the majority vote in that election.

First thing he’d do is abolish the 2 term presidency rule, just like Putin did. That is one thing that could seriously backfire, because that would open the door to Obama making a comeback. He is one man the Dems and the independents would rally around.

The iconic fist pumping photo: Apparently he shouted "wait, wait, wait" at the secret service guys before they dragged him off. As ever, the political opportunist. As has been said, he had 4 years as president to do something about guns, my view of him would go up if he now faced up to those National Rifle Association guys. He also needs to lower the political temperature, no more inflammatory language about democratic votes, win or lose. He is reported to be shouting “fight ,fight , fight” . Who or what isn’t clear !! My "wait, wait, wait" came from a BBC reporter who was close to the action - what's your source?

Initial reports at the scene and BBC Newsnight and fits in with the fist pumping. If you listen to the recordings you will hear him , oddly, telling his secret service agents to wait and “ lee me get my shoes “” !!

The whole thing is astonishing.
I have sympathy with people thinking it was staged because it was pure dramatic theatre. It literally looked like what happened in Designated Survivor.
But as a real incident it is about as dramatic a thing as we'll ever see. The white house is now his. He's untouchable. Literally.

The fist in the air with the stars and stripes is as iconic a scene that we will see in many lifetimes. It tickles me that the Euros final was much bigger news here than the assassination attempt. I, for one, was not surprised to hear of an attempt. I was surprised there was no attempt during his first stint 🤷♂️ maybe that is why it wasn't such big news.

You’d expect any attempt at an assassination to be thwarted long before it could actually take place. It’s mad how the Secret Service actually allowed a man with a rifle to climb up onto a rooftop about 150 yards away from where a presidential candidate was speaking.

Conspiracy theories galore after this, from both BlueAnon and QAnon. Does seem strange that they were unable to stop the shooter before he took aim as looking to footage, there were people there who caught sight of him and were looking to raise the alarm. Yet he was still able to take the shot. I guess there will be an investigation as to how that was allowed to happen. Seen lots of suggestions that it was fake and that Trump even applied fake blood once he fell to the ground but his reaction certainly didn't come across as fake and I think there is also a photo taken that captures the bullet flying past (no doubt one or two will claim that was fake too, mind). And of course, someone lost their life and another is severely injured. I did also wonder why he would be able to ask to wait, to get his shoes and also to raise his head again (as they would have had no idea if the shooter was still active or whether there was more than one) but I thought that happened immediately after the shot was fired but there was actually a fair amount of time where he was on the floor and I think at that time they were informed they had shot the shooter, so maybe they were confident he was safe at that time (why they waited a little, why he raised his head to call out to the crowd). As for the impact this will have, one thing is that it looks like the rhetoric is going to be toned down some. Which is good and hopefully continues. I guess its a wait and see as to the shooters motive but I do think some of the stuff aimed at Trump could well lead to such attempts at his life. In the last week alone Biden stated that it was time to put Trump in the bullseye, which I think he has since stated was a mistake. But whether it will move the dial, not sure. I would think most have already made up there mind. What does seem to be changing though is the momentum. Trump and his support now seem galvanized, Biden and his support not so much (and more so with the recent decision on the classified documents case). But how that will play out once everyone goes to the polls, not sure. But I think it will be as close as ever.
