Whilst on the face of it these are really minor issues, it does really bring home what a mess the current administration is in in terms of integrity and basic procedure in public office.
I've worked in and around the Civil Service and politicians for a long time now and that gives you access to a whole host of information that is not in the public domain, and is sensitive a range of different ways from commercial sensitivity, through to state security. Even at a very low level in the Civil Service its drummed into you in day one how sensitive this information is and not sharing it or making personal gain from it is. It really goes to the heart of public service that you have to trust people working in government.
How an MP or serving Police officer could even think putting a bet on the election day was a good idea, even if they had no inside information is hard to understand. If they did have inside informaton its even worse. One the face of it making a few pounds from a "cheeky bet" sounds a minor issue, but if there are such lax values at the heart of government about these issues, it does make you wonder what integrity there is in far more important issues to.
At the same time you can start to see why the PPE contract awards; iffy deals for companies offering outsourcing to government and Ministers going off to have off the record meetings with foreign nations is happening. There seems a lack of basic integrity in the whole system at the moment.
