I've only got 3 booked at the moment. Download Festival, Geoff Tate (former singer in Queensryche) at the Tiv in Buckley in October and Sepultura in Manchester in November.

The present Mrs Potted and I will be off to see Suede and the Manics in Llangollen at the end of June. Decent Christmas presents are a huge advantage of having an adult offspring.

Its interesting seeing the lists of bands people are seeing in the summer how a career people have in music now. Some acts mentioned have been active for over 40 years and still going strong now and filling out large venues. Im also off to see Elbow in Ludlow and looking forward to seeing Nadine Shah there as a supporting act. Big Special are a new band I'd like to see in the summer On the downside of the older groups still going strong I do wonder where on the music venue calender younger new acts are able to get in on the act and where the 18 - 25 age groups are getting their access to these bands. When I go to gigs its always seems to be full of 40 plus people like me, which is nice to see us oldies still enjoying music but I'm not sure where younger acts get that opportunity to play in a reasonably sized venue and build up a following. I know lots of smaller venues are closing now too which is a bit sad, as I had some great nights many moons ago in small clubs and venues in Brum, Manchester and Leeds and hope there is somewhere similar young people are going to see up and coming acts nearly all my faves are still going well over 40 years in most cases. Can't say there are any newer bands I like. I have a soft spot for gloomy Scandinavian metal. Again lots of those bands have been going for 10 years plus. May I suggest Heilung, if you're not already familiar with their work

Pixies in Halifax, I am so excited. Saw The War on Drugs there last year, it's an incredible venue.

Wasn't familiar with Pixies thanks for introducing them. I'm impressed. They sound like the educated children of one of my favourite all time bands The Pink Faries

But if you have Spotify, doesn't that mean you have everything they've ever recoded, including the live albums? Apologies if I'm just being a bit thick.

Mmmm Ricky I never got past the Abacus so Spotify is a few years off for me. Also I do like the albums art works although I will be sticking with CDs as the vinyl is quite pricy

Delighted it's Nadine Shah, someone I'm keen to see - loved 'Greatest Dancer'. I also like Villagers, so pleased to get to see them too. I saw my old favourite, John Cooper Clarke in Salford recently, with three terrific supports (Luke Wright, Toria Garbutt and Mike Garry). Been a big JCC fan since buying his first EP, Psycle $!uts, way back. Also saw The Leisure Society and Tom Bright at Shrewsbury Abbey. Wonderful band and venue - Live In The House deserve support for all they're doing to bring decent live music to Shrewsbury, instead of all the tedious tribute bands at Theatre Severn.

During covid, I got introduced to a whole range of new bands through some people/music accounts I follow on Twitter and it's been a lovely eye-opener. There's loads of upcoming bands who I can see play locally (Brum, Wolves, Stoke and even the odd one in town) and it's nice to go to a gig for £15 as opposed to £60+ that the established acts charge. Last September I went to a 'festival' which was effectively a nightclub in Sheffield, 40 unsigned bands (at the time) for £15, amazing value. It was headlined by Lottery Winners although I never actually saw them So there is still definitely a scene out there, but ultimately the bands need radioplay and without that, they will struggle to get the big festivals. Because of that, I've seen quite a few of these bands calling it a day which is sad. I'm seeing a band called The K's at Albert Shed next month (rescheduled from last month) and then planning to do Heal at the West Mid Showground, that's certainly guilty of just going for older, established acts. I wouldn't travel to go to it but as it's on our doorstep I'll go, plus it's decent value.

One festival we miss is Carfest North.
We went to the one at Bolesworth for a number of years, sadly they decided that it was no longer financially viable.

I used to go to the Shrewsbury Fields festival on the show ground which was a bit hit and miss in terms of organisation. Is Heal a bit more organised?

Have to say this thread makes me feel officially old. Like I've never heard of probably 75% of those mentioned
Whatever happened to Slade, T Rex and the Sweet?

They are in my collection, T Rex reissues are fairly regular and worth getting as there is so much of Bolan's work is worth listening to. One of my holy grail records is King of the rumbling spires which came out as a single in the late 60's. I've been trying to find a mint copy for about 20 years. I found one in Sweden but it was going for 750 euros. I offered him 300, no deal sadly 😔

I think it's the same people as Shrewsbury Fields I went last year and they had only had one bar so there was massive queues, so much so that in the afternoon we left to have a few beers in Coton Hill (I made sure I got back in the evening for the bands I wanted to see). Apparently there was a VIP section but that was stupidly busy too. They have said they have learnt their lesson and there will be improvements this year, I get the impression that they hadn't sold many tickets in advance and a lot of people turned up on the day. There was also issues with The Enemy having their set cut short as I think they came on late due to Cast over-running earlier From memory I got early bird tickets and they were really good value, haven't got tickets this year yet but will probably go, mainly as would like to see Tom Meighan and Embrace.

Thanks for the info, I might try it this year but with low expectations! Shrewsbury Fields had some good acts play the 2-3 years it lasted but the organisation was also pretty shambolic - remember one year all the food vendors went home on the Sunday. Venue should be well set up with the folk festival there each year, but somehow the Shrewsbury fields felt like a group of mates arranging a gig with their favourite acts but forgot about the logistics

I think the main organiser is a lad I went to college with, a lovely lad with big ideas but gets a bit carried away. The festival won't win any awards but its on your doorstep and is £32 for a day ticket, costing just £6 more to spend 90 minutes down Croud Meadow next season😄
