We had income streams from player sales and sell ons like Connor Goldson moving to Rangers in 2018… Remember Brian saying 20/21 was the first year we hadn’t got staggered transfere payments coming through. 🤥 hurst was at Ipswich when goldson joined rangers Its amazing how desperate some are to claim we failed in by far our best season in decades 😝 Goldson had also left Town in 2015 to join Brighton so wasnt with us when Hurst was. He left Brighton in 2018 to go to Rangers.

We sold Goldson to Brighton in 2015. The same summer we sold Ryan Woods. I imagine those are the staggered payments they are referring to.
The club made a profit of £341k that season and £409k the season before.
That is £750k of unspent money across two seasons if we were going to "have a go at it" in the January, even if FFP did apply, which is didn't.
In June 2018, at the end of that season we had a cash reserve of £2.9 million. We lost the final though.
In the end it all depended on if Lennell John Lewis. with his fresh legs, had the desire to mark a knackered old central defender from a corner. No-one would be talking about January if it had gone to penalties and we had won.
But that January was a huge missed opportunity. We had the resources we were saving for a rainy day but it rained after 103 minutes at Wembley and by then it was too late.

And look what's happened to the rainy day fund in the meantime, gone and we continue to make losses (so says the CEO).

Some interesting stats and they don't surprise me, even the harshest critic of Roland would surely accept we have progressed a lot since 1996.
But my challenge/question is whether we have progressed in the last decade, personally I don't believe we have. Prior to this season I certainly wouldn't have said we have gone backwards but the going's on over the past 12 months would make me reconsider that. That is partly because when we last got relegated (in 2014) we got an instant return as we had the finances & stability for a promotion battle, if the worst were to happen next season where we got relegated and we still had the same structure as we do today, I suspect we would be in L2 for a while.

same question, using hindsight, who would you have purchased in January that could have seen us go from 87 points to 97 points ?

That's the same logic Mal Whitrick applied when he asked Gaz Hopkins where he would put a supporters bar! Hurst decides the players, let him make the list. We dropped points when we realised we were not going to catch them and we played both the top teams. Beat Blackburn away we're on 90 to their 93. Fine margins and all that.

Hoping to prove Pilch wrong I went trawling for threads about the January transfer window under that miracle season, and it pains me to admit everyone appears to be overjoyed with it. blueandamber.proboards.com/thread/96546/good-transfer-windowMaybe I was being harsh in hindsight as I remembered the window being rubbish but obviously at the time everyone thought we'd pulled a blinder. Whoops!

Whoops! Yeah, I think there's a bit of revisionism in the "we didn't go for it in January" narrative based on us ultimately falling just short. A striker is often cited as the one we could have thrown some money at, but we had the Premier League's Carlton Morris up front with a goalscorer in Payne in reserve, and we played one up front. All over the spine of the team we had good options, I'm not sure who you'd have displaced from the starting eleven if we'd bought in some quality. Thomas came with a high reputation at the end and seemed like a coup, I think Hurst had built up enough trust that on paper underwhelming signings like Jones and Hendrie would come good (they didn't, but still) We probably could have got more strength in depth in, if you're being picky. And also, we did do enough really. Wasn't the stat at the time that 8 of the last 9 seasons our points total would have been good enough for top two, or something like that? It's not Roland's fault we were up against two teams basically financially doping, who could bring in Cole and Armstrong.

My belief is that......if junior brown had stayed fit.... we'd have gone up,forget about should we signed this, that and the other....we missed brown big time...the lad was on fire....and nobody could disagree with that!!

However, his replacement (Beckles) got into the League One team of the year so clearly didn't too badly.

Hindsight was indeed a beast.
Armstrong scored 9 in 23 for Blackburn and Sam Jones only played 5 times for us. Nathan Thomas was also a total flop.
The main relief though was the we hadn't lost any of our players - Nolan was rumoured to be attracted bigger clubs, and Godfrey / Henderson could have been recalled.

Mind you, with the dreaded hindsight, it wouldn’t have made a blind bit of difference if they had been and we’d have not wasted money going to Wembley!

Because I suspect if the result of this research by Pilch had not been favourable to RW he wouldn’t have posted it !! 🤔 I created the thread before I even knew the results , I actually surprised myself when they appeared , but hey don't let me stop you shooting the messenger about this pesky thread 😳😳 I’ve never doubted that RW’s impact up until the last few years has been very sensible with slow progress, I doubt that he’s the right person to stay in charge and take us forward, how do you feel surrounding that?

Some have been doing this for a number of years but the events over the past 12 months have increased the people who think it's time for a change, considering the state we are in, I don't see why that would be a surprise to anyone. As for there are no serious buyers, no one knows that. Our CEO has said on several occasions there is interest and discussions have taken place, what we don't know is why that hasn't gone any further
