Not a lost ground as in the others I've put on here in recent weeks but it certainly nearly was. Was left derelict as Charlton left and ground shared with Crystal Palace and West Ham for several years before coming back to life.
My only visit was a Friday evening game late April 1982 when we snatched a late Alan Brown goal in a 1-0 win. A few years later they moved out.
The size of the huge East terrace was amazing. What we didnt know as Chris Smith's coach (single for this game), having negotiated inner London through the rush hour (pre M25 days) was that there had been a tea time thunderstorm in the area that had deposited so much rain that the ref had only just passed the pitch for for play and the groundsman were still busy forking the pitch.
Did you go in the days before it was rebuilt?
If you want a more in depth history of their struggles then watch this one

I didn’t but I do know that my father was a life long Charlton supporter so he would have done.

Yes, went twice in the 80’s, we won 4-2 with Cross and McNally both scoring (can’t remember others), and another time a 1-1 draw with Paul Johnson scoring for us.
The massive terrace was there but disused and derelict.

I am a bit out of touch with the online rigmarole of buying match tickets. I am also not 100% sure I can go to Charlton on Saturday just yet. Can you just turn up and buy a ticket on the day? (I have emailed the ticket office as my registration/supporter number does not work)

The thing I remember most about The Valley is that it is literally buried in the ground! I remember going past it years ago on the upper deck of a bus and being shocked that I could actually look down on part of the pitch! I guess that’s why they call it the Valley!

Just thought, this could be a new thread, “Grounds you’ve been to that are under ground level”! I’ve been too Camp Neu in Barcelona, Siena in Italy and the Odsal Stadium in Bradford!

As mentioned above, why on earth don’t they just clearly state whether you can pay on the day for each away game?
I’m in London anyway and will try to make it if possible, but I have no idea whether I’ll be able to get in.
It’s a real easy fix.

Is Charlton's entry music still into the valley by the Skids ?

I have now got a ticket in my online basket on the Town website (Diane was super helpful). Waiting to hear if I can collect from Charlton on the day.

Just to confirm - match tickets bought online and not collected from the Meadow by Friday can be collected at Charlton. (I am resident in Brighton) See you all there!

The last time I went to Charlton on the day on the off chance as a neutral it was “Members Only” . That was some years ago though 🤔

One of my favourite away days following Town was Charlton under Hurst. A rowdy & loud away end and a dominant performance, the scenes around Borough Market & London Bridge were fantastic, if you could bottle an away day that would be it.
I like the Valley as a ground although from memory the one away pub was absolutely terrible. Fortunately you are only a tube ride from plenty of choice.

Unfortunately can’t make it but always use The Anchor and Hope 15 mins walk, riverside pub that’s very welcoming. You can even park on the road leading to it. whatpub.com/pubs/SEL/10894/anchor-hope-charlton

I went a couple of times after moving to Kent in the late 70s. On the first occasion in 1979 I stood high up on the terrace which ran down one side of the ground. You felt like you needed binoculars! I think it was 2-1 to them.
The second time was a proper smash and grab 1-0 win. I have just done a bit of research: this was 1983, on a Friday in late April, and the pitch was appalling. Alan Brown scored. There are brief highlights on YouTube, including the groundstaff trying to get the pitch playable!
My next visit was when the ground was derelict, with weeds three feet high covering the pitch. The transformation after they returned was remarkable. I find it almost impossible to relate what you see now to the layout of the original ground.

I used to live in the lovely Thamesmead/Plumstead area of London moving there just before they vacated the Valley in 1985. My daily train commute into London went directly past the Valley and I was able to view the rapid decline of the pitch and the terraces as nature tool its hold. Good to see they eventually made it back but never did get to attend a game there - I had long gone by then!!

That game was the time I went to the Valley, there had been a teatime thunderstorm and the pitch only just passed a late inspection by the ref.
