My dad can't go to the pub any more but I was with him yesterday and we bumped into one of his old Thursday night drinking pals. I asked how much a pint in the Corner House is these days: "A pint of mild's £2.20. He put the price up 80p after Covid, it used to be £1.40. Covid's got a lot to answer for." Crikey I didn’t realise you could still buy Mild in a pub, certainly not at 1980’s prices 😁 used to love a couple of pints of M&B Mild back in the day- even if I did often get called a Wuss for drinking it 👍 I was thinking the same, used to love mild. Never get it down south. I used to manage 4 pints in the Salopian for less than a quid, (24p pint) back in the late 70's. We always used to go in there before a game as it was a bit out of the way and we were all still at school. No ID needed in those days!

Not to mention The Horns, now knocked down I think and the Leigh Arms…… If that's the one next to the Leigh Arms yes, it's gone. Think it was an Indian restaurant for a while. The Leigh Arms is still going though I haven't been there for a long time. Did you know the Oaklands, between Cuddington and Weaverham? That was a lovely spot but went downhill. Might be better now. The Alvanley Arms and the Fox & Barrel were good eating places and seem to be thriving now. Yes to the Alvanley Arms and Fox and Barrel. The later was Cheshire's no 1 eating place back then, 84/85, they used to do gourmet evenings and the landlord you home in a London double decker bus. There was also one in Eaton that got knocked down and a bit further away, The Shady Oak at Tibberton? There was another one in Acton Bridge (Hazel Pear just checked) and one in Delamere Forest, Fishpond or Fishpool. It was more a matter of locals taking me out to get me drunk but never succeeded 😂

The food was excellent, as always. The Fox & Barrel is good too. Both are only 4 miles or so from us.

If so, it's now under new ownership but is now called the Shady. My wife is going for lunch there next week. It's getting good reviews.

The decline of the local boozer is accelerating.
I can get a pint of San Miguel / Moretti in the pubs of Bayston Hill for just under a fiver, or for £6 I can get 3 660ml bottles from the fridge at the Sainsbury's garage on my way home.

I saw this at work earlier an thought I would check it out on my way home. my suspicions were right, 3 bottles for £6 was incorrect. It was £3 for 5.97

Anyone tried Three Tuns? Well nice Oh yes XXX in the Cross Foxes in Coleham is a wonderful pint Was just joining the thread to post this but beaten me to it. Consistently the best XXX pint I've found anywhere and if memory serves from before the Oxford game it was £3.90. By comparison, the pint I had at the actual Three Tuns pub in Bishops Castle just before Christmas was dreadful. Lucky to have a decent trifecta of ale pubs on my doorstep in Oakengates, The Crown and the Station being the ones I tend to go with. Think it's very rare a pint of ale tips over the £4 mark, usually closer to £3.60 and both have very good beer festivals during the year. Until recently the only proper ale pub I could find locally that dipped under £3 a pint was the All Nations in Madeley, who brew their own stuff on site. Think even that's around £3.50 now. Their black pudding, cheese and onion baps are the stuff of local legend though.

Their black pudding, cheese and onion baps are the stuff of local legend though. Agree with all of that. I went to Three Tuns before Christmas and I think they only had Three Tuns drinks in bottles, I'm sure there is some sort of dispute between the bar and the brewery. The (small number of) pubs in Oakengates are decent, occasionally will go there after work, the two you've mentioned + the Old Fighting Cocks are ones we will head to. I had a pint of Shropshire Gold in the Masonic at £3.80 on Saturday which was nice. And speaking of Salopian Brewery, I went to their tap room opening on Friday night, the first weekend of every month, would highly recommend it. It's a shame it's not closer to town + their opening hours a a bit strange (think its 3-7 on Friday and 12-5 on Saturday) but saying that, it's always packed whenever we go

We were lucky in Shropshire in the early 70s there were only 4 brew pubs in the country and we had two, The All Nations and The Three Tuns

I hope you got a chance to try the curry house next door too, superb. On your point about the way communities used to be, I'm sure I read an article a while back that suggested there used to be about 15 pubs on or around that high street once upon a time. The Black Horse has lay dormant for a good fifteen years or so now.

The Fishpool looks very smart and I'd like to stop there sometime as I often pass it. I haven't been since I was a kid. One place I don't like is the Cholmondeley Arms on the A49. It's a nice place and the food was good when I ate there years ago, but I heard more recently the chef was a rude t**t to a friend after a mild complaint, and the last time I called in there were two bar staff who couldn't be arsed to serve me but were immediately attentive to some queue-jumping hooray in a pink shirt.

The Cholmondley arms had a good reputation early on, best eatery in Cheshire. They also owned The Riverside Inn at Cressage which I never rated, miserable land lord 😅
