Following on from my post about Millmoor, Rotherham and keeping it topical how many of you on here ever went to the old Reading ground? We played them very regularly in the 50s and 60s.
I did it first in around 1983 or 84 when I was 'doing the 92'. It wasnt with the Shrews as we had a period of not playing them for awhile. I know it was a Friday night but cant remember who they were playing. Didnt get there with too much time to spare so never got a good look around the place.
Went with Salop when we played them in either 86 or 87, and again dont have any real memories of the place or the game. Whichever game it was we lost.....
How many of you actually got to the old ground and what memories have you got?

I went with my two young sons, late 80's. Can't remember which season but it was a lovely sunny, warm day. I remember being on the open end and we lost!
The picture on the Shrewsbury Town page looks about right but I'm not sure about the kit.

October 12th 1974 is forever etched on my memory. Town won 2-1 with I’m sure Sammy Irvine scoring the winner. Lovely old ground as I remember it with a huge open terrace which had some good numbers of Town support on the day.
After the game ended, for some reason the police kept all the Town fans in the ground and then randomly arrested about a dozen of us. We were carted off to Reading police station and because a number of us were juveniles they put 5 of us into one cell. Then they let us out at at 3:00 a.m. in the morning. No one was charged with anything and we never heard anything about it again. I still see two of my cell mates at the meadow and we often have a giggle about it.
Haven’t been to Reading since, but wish I was going tomorrow

Was there first game of 89-90 season, a great 3-3 draw, Tony Kelly scored a maize effort if I remember rightly, I say "if" I was was very hungover as it had been my stag night on the previous evening and worse for wear is an understatement. I remember Chris Smith asking did I want to book for the next away game at Blackpool and me explaining that I would be on my honeymoon

I’ve not been but can I just say that I am loving these threads about old grounds and memories. There won’t be enough of them for me.

1970 😱- the joys of following the Town in a packed, unsegregated ground. We lost.

First league ground I ever went to in September 1973 to see them play Peterborough.
Also saw them beat Workington 1-0 in a League game with a goal after 55 seconds. Workington had 9 team changes to the programme which was unheard of. They went out of the League 2 seasons later.
I can say I saw the great Robin Friday play, so the book "The best player you never saw" doesn't apply to me.
Also there was a Town game in 1988 when the Town fans wit was very evident. Referee gave strange decision(s) we were broke into a chant of "You're worse than Shakoor Rana" which was a reference to Mike Gatting's argument with the cricket umpire in Pakistan.
