Just heard on Radio Shropshire that today,23rd February, has been declared Shropshire Day. Its the feast of St Milburgh, who died on this day in 727 and is the county's patron saint.
So to celebrate, what's your favourite thing about our fantastic county?

In general its just a nice place to live. I go to other towns and they look a right state, the country side is great and there is lots to do in the county.
Interesting fact - there are 92 children's homes in Shropshire which is more than any other county in the UK in relation to the population.

I would say about 90% at least are privately run as opposed to local authority run with the children being looked after mainly from other local authorities . It’s a very lucrative business with privately run children’s homes charging a lot for their services . Obviously they need to keep up with the latest regulations . It’s a very hard job , remember most of the children have been abused and traumatised often by members of their own family . Anyway , it’s Shropshire Day so let’s celebrate . I would but I’m suffering from bloody gout again . Not as bad as the Christmas attack but still a barsteward even though I’m on Allopurinol . Things can only get better, I hope.

Aside from the main topic, have you recently been put on Allopurinol? Takes a while to get into your system from my experience. They also increased it from 100m to 200m and then onto 300m before it finally cleared up my gout. Not had it for several years now.

There's also things like residential schools for autistic young people, there's one near Shifnal. I had a job lined up there after deciding to change careers (the pay off for leaving the old job was too good to miss). I visited and everything, but then I got a letter to say they were having a restructure and halting recruitment. I got a nice little job after with a charity, so all ended well. Years before, traveling back from London, a lady on the train confided in me that she was visiting her son at a college for autistic young people in the countryside near Rugeley, the first time she would see him in 6 weeks, she still worried if she had done the right thing. Anyway, Happy Shropshire Day. I think it's Hobson's Mild that is a reasonable substitute for Wem Mild.

I think it is the sense of it being relatively "unspoiled".
Despite massive recent development there are huge areas of countryside. It does not grind to a halt with tourists all summer then become ghost towns in winter. Nowhere is that far from anywhere else.
If it had the sea it would be perfect, but then it wouldn't be unspoiled.

Was put on Colchicine for two weeks and Allopurinol 300mg since beginning of Feb so just over 3 weeks . The other week I was fine , walking almost back to normal so was delighted . This has come out of the blue. Been careful with diet but had a lovely Barnsley chop on Sunday . Wife thinks that together with gravy made with meat juices had triggered it. You live and learn - I’ll be on a diet of water and grass next .👍

Floreat Salopia!
I will use today as an opportunity to offer a hyperbolic brain-teaser: "Shropshire gave the world evolution and revolution."

The ones that are not private are staffed with agency so cost even more than outsourcing it to private companies. It is a very hard job but very rewarding.

I also went on one of their free courses while in my new job, all the way to somewhere up towards Rhyl, in the place where the rusting ship is.
What did I have a lucky escape from? Higford seemed a well set up and equiped site. My lucky escape was doubled because they came back to me a few months later saying there was a maternity vacancy, but I'd got the other job by then

I believe it is just a SEN school now.

Favorite thing used to be the Gay Meadow and the matchday experience. Even on non match days traveling anywhere on the train it was always special returning into town past the ground. Flower show days and the Market cheap Jack's also created a special atmosphere. The surrounding countryside is lovely but just not the same county town.

If it had the sea it would be perfect, but then it wouldn't be unspoiled. Spot on. Both Shrewsbury & Shropshire are often called hidden gems and I think that typifies the whole understated nature of the area, yes we are a bit of a backwater and perhaps we should shout a bit more about what we have to offer, but then as you've suggested, if we do that, the place changes.

Yes I take allopurinol one a day which seems to have kept it at bay.
Reading up about chemotherapy it seems to be a lucky coincidence for me as chemo can cause a build up of acid so allopurinol can sometimes be given before treatment anyway.
