Looks like Lyndsay Hoyle had achieved something that most people would have thought impossible, he’s managed to p**s off The Commons more than his predecessor Mr Bercow ever did.
What a mess politics in this country is in, from all sides. Shocking and we should all deserve better.
This whole sorry episode turned out to be nothing about the situation in the Middle East and everything about political parties in this country electioneering and seeking to point score off the backs of the desperate people in Gaza.
Shameful

Shameful I posted this on another thread, but it bears repeating.
What an absolute embarrassment. Israel will take great pleasure in seeing a vote like this descend into the shambles it did, because it doesn't actually make a clear case for a the UK making unified call to stop the killing. What this has led to however is further division that will unify Scotland still backing the SNP at the General Election over Labour, because Labour will have been seen to have trampled over the wishes of the Scottish electorate again.

Shameful What a shambles indeed . The SNP furious over the Speakers decision to accept the Labour amendment first , with the Tory party equally p**sed off. The SNP leader in the House didn’t seemed convinced that Lindsey Hoyle made a decision which he thought was fair and which protected all MP’s . He has offered to meet with the leaders of the aggrieved parties but I think Stephen Flynn smells blood and wants Hoyle gone. As you say all about process and the situation in Gaza ignored really . What a s**teshow our present Parliament is . Sunak trying to convince everyone that he knows what he’s doing and Starmer looking to let him flail away knowing that as long as he keeps away from contentious issues Sunak will continue to self destruct. Interesting that Ben Bradshaw raised a question during PM Questions about the equalities minister meeting with LGBT representatives to discuss important issues . He maintains that although she said that she had met with them on a number of occasions a freedom of information request had shown this to be completely untrue. She hadn’t meet with them at all. Is’nt Badenoch the Equalities Minister . The quality of our MP’s is the lowest I can remember .Half of them would be better of on a reality tv show .

The Rochdale bi-election gives us a pretty good idea of just how bad things have got relating to UK politics. It just seems to be one thing after another. And whist I understand the concern when it comes to the standard of MP's there is a wider issue here which is even more concerning and that is the reasons given by Starmer to Hoyle as to why the Labour amendment should be considered. If true then it seems we now have UK politics and Commons procedure determined by extremists who are using threats and intimidation to pressure MP's to vote certain ways...
This was apparently the reason why Starmer asked Hoyle to break with procedure; because he feared for the safety of MP's and their families. Maybe more will come out over the next few days but this means Starmer was either using these threats and intimidation to emotional blackmail Hoyle to save him from a rebellion in his own ranks or we do indeed have MP's voting one way or another because they fear for their safety. If violent threats towards MP's prompted Hoyle to act as he did then forget Rochdale, this is a whole new level. Again, shameful.
I guess we should hear more about this over the coming days.

This is all about process really isn’t it. MP’s jumping up and down over something which I would say bothers not one iota the majority of the population . So, it’s not about Gaza and Israel it’s now about the chosen amendment and how political parties view the decision taken by Lindsey Hoyle . Of course the SNP feel hard done by, it was supposed to be their day . Whichever amendment was chosen what difference would it have made to people’s lives in Gaza . The answer is not a great deal to be honest but it doesn’t matter, that issue flew out the window to be superseded by the SNP and some Tory MP’s calling out foul , Starmer has stitched us up and put pressure on Hoyle to chose his amendment . When there is a call for business to be conducted in private i.e. without the public or cameras looking on then you have to think what on earths happening here . Why would that be a good thing. The last time that happened was during the Second World War for security reasons.
No, the whole debacle has saddened me and has shown up our political parties in a bad light . It has been pathetic beyond words and is not the way we expect our chosen representatives to behave.

As someone pointed out at PMQ's why not allow MPs a free vote on this issue without being whipped.

Everything is a shambles and has been for a long time.
We just don’t have a high calibre of leadership in this country on either side.
I don’t know why this should be.
Are the people with ethics and quality not interested in politics and our chaotic Parliament? Can people who would be good just not be able to afford to enter parliament? Or does the way our ‘culture’ has evolved over the years just mean that our politics are totally selfish and unethical.
Whatever the reasons, we are a mess and a laughing stock.

The SNP siding with the right of the Tory party? Well done Starmer for stitching them up, we now seem to be in a period of more notice being taken of what Labour says than the Conservatives, just treading water until Sunak & co finally throw in the towel. Reminiscent of an out of touch Sir Alec Douglas-Home making way for Harold Wilson.

Farcical - SNP and Tories will cry foul, but Labour played the political game better than them.
What astounds me more is how worked up in the UK we get about foreign policy when there are far more important domestic issues, well at least in my opinion anyway.

The whole thing is a farce, with the major parties playing games to score points.
In any event we have very little influence on Israel and it is nieve and arrogant to think that anyone cares about how MPs vote.
All tryrants understand is military power and financial clout, in that regard I put Putin and the Israeli leader in the same boat
