It sums up the modern football fan to be honest - we were all rightfully disgusted by the football played this season, Hurst brings in a ball player, we play better football that doesn’t yield the points it deserves and now we want to go back to just having hard men in midfield that tackle hard and lump the ball upfield. I was going to post something very similar I must admit. I’m finding this criticism all very baffling although I do understand that Hinchy is young and needs other players around him.

Hurst’s ideal midfield player has the ability to tackle hard but also make something happen - think Godfrey, Ogogo and Nolan.
The loanee in that group is now playing in the PL and has represented England. It would be grossly unfair to compare Hinchy with him.
Hinchy may well need to toughen up but let’s give him a bit of time.

Having reflected, probably two very hard and competitive games in the space of a few days for the kid.
He's definitely not the worst player to have pulled on a Salop shirt,

Started last 3 games been awful in all 3. No way he is up to L1 standard he’s weak physically and gives the ball away far too much. Dreadful post. We're trashing young players after 3 games? The state of us.

Winchester is the best option at the present, Individually, I think our midfielders are no worse than we've generally had in League 1. It's as a unit that they don't seem to function very effectively. I'm not convinced that Hurst's preferred 4-3-3 is any better suited to the players we have than the late and unlamented 3-5-2 (for which read 5-3-2 for much of the time) of Taylor and Cotterill. We still seem to be outnumbered in midfield. Bloxham looks to have a bit more about him since his spell away and I'd like to see him given a run alongside Udoh as a second striker, with four in midfield rather than three. That way we might not be so easy to pass through and have numbers to allow runners from midfield to get in the box and support the front pair, knowing there was cover behind them. We look like we're trying to play 4-3-3 without a Whalley or a Rodman.

Norburn, Chapman (when he wanted to play), Docherty, Laurent, Nolan, Dodds and Ogogo were streets ahead of anything in the current squad. There is no speed nor intent out wide, Yes Bloxham runs around as best he can but why's he flicking balls on to no one in particular, usually when Udoh is standing in the box double marked.

We look like we're trying to play 4-3-3 without a Whalley or a Rodman. We played the majority of the game 4-2-3-1 and only went to 4-3-3 for the final 20 minutes after Wigan had dropped deeper. Wigan were dominant in midfield from the outset, seemingly able to control the ball, turn and drive at our defence at will. Our entire midfield was collectively to blame with Winchester poor, Bayliss typically powderpuff out of possession and Shipley having as poor a half as I can remember. If Hinchy isn’t physical enough I suspect one of him or Bayliss will have to be sacrificed. We certainly had more bite when Perry and Kenneh came on, and pushed Wigan back (albeit they did somewhat invite the pressure).

I think kennah will come back in satday.....think Hurst is trying to get him fitter, which will help him a lot... he's a good tackler, and wins the ball back well..... hopefully his passing will improve too.bayliss will have to do a lot more,to convince me, he's any good.....poor🤷🤷

I thought all five subs improved us but I can't see wholesale changes to the starting X1. Think Kennah and Perry will start in place of Hinchy and Bayliss or Shipley. Bennett may come on for Feeney if we need a goal as he offers better service down the right hand side.

The midfield will change surely,
I think there is an element that both Hinchy and Bayliss are a little lightweight.
A good manager plays to his squad's strengths although I don't know what those are.
Maybe I'll take a day off to investigate :-)

It’s funny how Kenneh and Perry have been widely criticised and Hurst applauded for leaving them out, yet on Saturday they were praised for making a positive difference when they came on.
Maybe the extra incentive of proving yourself after being left out?
Hurst almost certainly has still not settled on the best combination in midfield from the players available. I think he’ll be lucky to find it this season. It’ll all change in the summer, to be sure. We just have to hope we can muster 15+ points from all these experimental combinations and highly variable individual performances.

And of course it’s easier to look good and put yourself about when you’re coming on against tired legs, your teams got all the ball, opponents have parked the bus and it’s just attack after attack after attack. I still think the starting midfield is the best we have available to us at the moment and expect to see it again against Reading.

There is no speed nor intent out wide, Yes Bloxham runs around as best he can but why's he flicking balls on to no one in particular, usually when Udoh is standing in the box double marked. I did say "generally". No speed or intent out wide? We don't have any wingers or genuine wing backs (though Benning is doing great work there), so how can there be? I wouldn't say any of the players you listed provided speed or intent out wide - different times, different teams. I know we've had some decent midfielders over the decade or so but how many played an appreciable number of games at a higher level than League 1? That's a better test of a player's quality than the rose-tinted specs of hindsight. Norburn had one season there in a relegated team, Nolan less than that in another relegated team, Chapman was never that good - only Laurent (who many Salop fans accused of playing when it suited him) and Docherty came close to establishing themselves as better than League 1. So no, I don't accept that our current midfielders are streets behind as individual players. If you dropped those past players individually into our current team they'd probably struggle to make an impression too. For too long we've played a system that played over the top of midfield or tried to work overloads out wide without getting numbers into the box. I'm sure the current players could be a more effective unit if they weren't so frequently outnumbered - or made to scrap for 50:50 balls. As for Bloxham, I wasn't his biggest fan but I think he's done ok since he came back. If he's flicking balls on to no one in particular doesn't that suggest that he'd be better used playing infield, instead of stuck out on the right? He has pace and strength - if he played more centrally he could use those attributes with more attacking options open to him. He might not be good enough but I think it's time we found out. And Udoh standing double marked in the box? Exactly! Our attack has little or no support and is far too static. We need to be stronger through the middle and to get more numbers in the box. It's no wonder we can't score enough when we seem hell bent on playing in a way that doesn't suit the players we have.

Brought on at half time. Gives a terribly cheap ball away leads to 2nd goal. A total liability and poor management by Hurst

He gave the ball away in the build up to their second goal and we then fell apart, granted.
However, the opening minutes of the second half prior to that mistake showed exactly why Hinchy, though he has faults, should start.
For the entirety of the first half, neither Bennett or Kenneh the ball off the centre backs and controlled anything. Hinchy immediately stamped some authority and rolled the ball into Bloxham out wide 2-3 times.
Yes, he then contributed to a shambles of a half afterwards but whilst our squad is so low on quality, the option we should go for is Hinchy over Kenneh every time.

From the highlights alone Dunkley gave the ball away and put them through on goal, Winchester left a back pass short that contributed to giving a penalty away, and these are two of our best players! But sure, let’s expect the loan kid to drag us through these woeful games.
