With the new loanee coming from Brighton, aged 21, I always wonder how the club looks after new players?
Do we just put them up in a hotel and expect them to look after themselves, or does the club have a number of houses which the players rent together, or do we have kindly landladies who feed them and look after them?
I believe in the 60’s and 70’s many players stayed in the Abbey Hotel in Whitehall Street, but I expect that ended years ago.
Obviously to get the most out of new players, the club needs to help them settle in asap - really interested to know how this occurs.
Also, for that matter, does the club have a house that managers live in while at the club, and use after games etc rather than travelling miles to their homes?

I used to sit with Ruth who owned the Abbey then when I travelled to away games but I think eventually players found their own accommodation. She had some tales to tell I can tell you!

The club used to own a house on Hamilton Drive, Telford Estate.
Micky Brown lived there for a short period.

Cotterill was given the use of a house on priory road, and did nothing but complain about it on a near daily basis ;-)
not sure how many rooms it had but I heard some of the youth kids used to stop over

I think I remember the club asking for accommodation for young loanees a few years ago?
Ogbeta should have come back here, he had an uncle who he stopped with.

I only know of one rented flat, close to the Quarry. A few loanees used it, then Steve Cotterill had it. Winchester in there now
if they stay in hotels, i think they use the one on Shrewsbury Business Park, by Emstrey island.

Bit of a mix I expect. Some I imagine will commute if close by, but don't think that matches for this season.
Others will be in a hotel, or I imagine the club will try and help out with sorting out short term rentals, possibly sharing with one of the existing players/loans. I'm fairly sure it was mentioned that Elliott Thorpe was in a house somewhere in Shrewsbury.
But it is something that is treated as normal in football world but really isn't. Especially for your late, deadline day transfers where you might not know where you are moving to - to have a few hours notice on where you are living for the next 6-10 months!
I think that sort of thing and personal life in general is often over looked in terms of how someone is playing. I would hope the club is involved in sorting it, as the potential negative impact from lack of support could be massive.
As for Jack Hinchy, he grew up playing for Stockport so I wonder if he would be back staying with family and would commute from there.

Didn't Ian Sharps, Shane Cansdell Sherriff, Dean Holden and Kevin McIntyre commute from the Warrington area, as they were all nearby, what a defensive unit on the M56.

I would hope the club is involved in sorting it, as the potential negative impact from lack of support could be massive. There was an excellent interview with Graham Coughlan before Newport's FA Cup tie with Man United and he made the point that he understood how difficult life can be for his players - you're not earning life-changing amounts, you generally have very little security and you're usually living away from your family. He said he'd lived away from home (Sheffield) for about 17 years, often only getting there one day a week - he'd gone from changing nappies to seeing his kids off to university without spending that much time with them. Easy for fans to forget what a thankless and distinctly unglamorous life it can be.

Fairly easy commute from Stockport by road and a train every hour taking just over 60 minutes, so I guess Jack will stay with family.
I recall Arthur Rowley living in a club house, naturally it was painted blue and white. At the Copthorne side of town I think.

Back in the day I know the likes of Steve Pittman, Dave Walton and Darren Currie lived on Gains Park. Ross Maclaren and Paul Petts lived on Sutton Farm, Ken Mulhearn on Bayston Hill

We moved to Mytton Oak Road in 1963, and Arthur lived opposite Morris’ shop, number 36 or 38. They were building the new Kingswood estate, off Swiss Farm and Westlands Roads, and he moved to a new house there. No idea where he lived when he retired and came back.

That explains why i sometimes saw him walking about the Town centre then, if he was living right in it - always came across as a top bloke when i saw him

Must be really difficult for young players going out on loan, sometimes they don’t know where they will be tomorrow when it’s a last minute deal. They’re expected to settle in a new town, miles from family, then play well immediately.

Few players live on the new estates close to the ground on oteley road.
Bayliss & Marosi live East Midlands and car share with Shipley in Cov.

Just listened to Jack Hinchys interview on the O/S. He spent part of his childhood in Telford and has family friends there,as well as his main family in Greater Manchester. Sounds like he will split his down time between the two. I would imagine that in this case our location has been a benefit to getting the deal done

Pyke was staying in a house on Hendrick Close. It was rented. The landlady seems to be on standby for the club because there's a different player in there now.

Abbey House was in use in the early 80s too.
Much easier to rent flats / houses at short notice now - cannot imagine anybody wanting to do an Alan Partridge and live in a hotel or boarding house any more.

Yes I would think Ruth ran it for them more as a home from home. She was a great fan and I think was made an honorary member of the club. I know she used to provide the lunches at the old meadow for either the youth team or the first team when they were training. Sadly she has died now.

Funnily enough my lad came in the house yesterday and said somewhat nonchalantly, "Ryan Bowman just turned round on our drive". When quizzed further he informed me that he lives on the same road as one of his mates round the corner in Wem. Who knew?
