myself and a friend were today discussing the importance of alcohol being part of the whole football experience. we decided there are three basic kinds of people that watch football excluding families:-
Those that just go to watch football no alcohol wanted or needed to enjoy the football.
Those that love football but over the years of attending football have met people and enjoy the whole social part of football and like minded people enjoying a few drinks.
Finally those that go to the football to get p**sed and watch a match a bit like darts perhaps. These people could not go to the football without a pints.
Other views would be interesting are there any body here that couldnt watch football without a drink.

It does not bother me if I do not have a pint before the game these days, although there was a time when the thought of not having 3 or 4 before the game was unthinkable I'm definately more vocal at games after a couple of pints, and I think the atmosphere at the 11am Liverpool FA Cup game showed what a sober(ish) crowd does for a game...................

I must admit I do like my customery 3 pints before kick-off with a few friends on a purely social experience. I have been totally hammered in years gone by and to be honest it's a waste of money cus your to drunk to remember anything As a darts player, I didn't quite get your reference to it?

I personally would never drink before watching footie, I like to be able to watch the game and understand what's going on - and I'd certainly be incapable of doing that after a few pints

It doesn't really bother me whether or not I have a drink before the game - sometimes I do, sometiems I don't.
However I'd never go to a match pi$$ed, I don't really see the point as I doubt I'd be able to remember anything about the game the following day

what i meant about dards was that it seems to be a game that has come about from people looking for things to play/do whilst in the pub and add to the whole social part of the pub.
This was the link with alcohol, football and darts although didnt link it to well in my orginal post.

Used to be something I did on a fairly common basis. Remember crawling around the floor in Netto in Hull a number of years ago Have to say I am firmly in the camp that likes minimal alcohol before a game these days as it helps my memory!

I like to pop in the Telepost for a quick pint before games if I get into town in time, but to be honest I'm not too gutted if I can't. It's more to do with the social aspect than the actual alcohol for a lot of people I think...

I don't get p**sed before a game, but going to the pub for a couple of pints and having a game of dominoes with my Dad is part of the day for home games. At away games I like to be there in time for a drink in a good pub or club, have something to eat and a chat with fellow fans. A pleasant hour or two makes the journey bearable, because we always lose a lot more games than we win away. I think that is one reason the away following was so good in the Conference, it was a sociable day out (but winning helps). So yes to beer before a match Ant just needs to hold his drink better I'm completely sober and it's taken three goes to post this. I have now removed all references to darts.

I usually like to have 2 pints before the game, no more really, I did have six or seven pints before the game at Boston with rsix and friends, but I still remember what went on during that game, I spent nearly half of it looking on the Boston bench waiting for Gazza to come on

Went on a pub crawl around Reading a few years ago and I saw more of the bogs than I did of the match. It was the quickest game ever, seemed to last about half an hour. I've never had more than a couple of pre-match pints since that day.

Agree about the social side of things, that's the main reason I stayed following the Town after my first few games in '94 - I had not formed any allegiance to the side at that stage, it was the lads I had met that were the selling point (after that the fantastic football just kept me coming back ). Usually have 1 or 2 pre-match in the Cross Foxes if I can and then revert back for post-match analysis. Away trips can be a little heavier but try to have no more than 4 or 5 pre-match (sometimes fail ;D) as it can be a long day - seem to recall the Great Escape match being an honourable exception where we had a lot more than 5 but that was down to nerves
