This year is going to a big one in the US and it has the potential to be a massive one for the rest of the world. If you have a bit of time to kill it is worth looking at what Trump has called Agenda 47. Quite frankly it is f****ng terrifying. Here are a few of the highlights.
Bulldozing urban tent cities and forcing those living in them into what would in effect be internment camps.
Executing drug dealers.
Making peace with Putin and withdrawing US support for Ukraine.
The creation of so called 'Freedom Cities', educational facilities that follow right wing, Christian teachings.
A national 'Stop and Frisk Policy' that would give power to all law enforcement to stop and search anyone with zero justification.
Deploy the National Guard to restore law and order in areas that he deemed to be going against his agenda.
A new tax credit to reimburse teachers for buying and training with guns that could be be legally carried in schools.
He is even talking about flying f****ng cars.
The last one alone should be enough to make anyone with an IQ above double figures raise questions about his suitability for President, but unfortunately one third of all American voters would vote for him regardless. It is also widely feared that he could get the Supreme Court to overturn the two term limit for Presidents, restrict voting rights and in effect hand the GOP the House, the Senate and the Presidency for ever and turn the US into a one party state. Fascism isn't creeping these days, it's rushing at the world head on and it's not a world I want any part of.

For the supposed free leader of the world, the US has high percentages of extremely backward individuals.

Same in UK.
At least 30% of the electorate will always vote Tory, whatever the party has done (or not done).
Even in Blair's landslide year of 1997, 30.7% still voted Tory. 9,600,943 of them!

Trump now saying that he would actively encourage Putin to invade any NATO country that isn't paying their way.
This guy just has to be kept out of the White House.

Hi Neil! I am not entirely sure how you could possibly facilitate legallythat entirely justifiable desire, other than through the democratic voting system. For what it's worth, I can only see two scenarios whereby Mr Trump may be denied: firstly, the Democrats persuade the ageing (failing, arguably) Joe Biden to stand aside; or secondly - and probably more unlikely - for some sane and brave individuals in the GOP to wrest control of the Party from Mr Trump and put up a credible alternative for the nomination. Poor American voters...and not much good for the rest of the free world.... HELP!

Student debt forgiveness, limiting certain drugs to $35, giving Medicare the right to negotiate prices, the economy and jobs are doing quite well. The Democrats messed up in the first two years when they had the triumvirate and didn't push hard enough for real changes, especially voter rights. That could come back to bite them in November.

That may be true, and as I'm not an avid follower of US domestic issues, I shall accept what you say; I intended the word "failing" only in reference to his mental and physical state. Sorry for not being clear.

I agree with you to a certain extent, but let's be honest any country that has put up two octagenarians forward to run that country in the last two elections is hardly fit to call itself a world power.

That sounds vaguely "ageist" to me lol....and age, per se, shouldn't be the deciding factor - do you recall Reagan's brilliant quip at the expense of Walter Mondale some years ago...? I worry that President Biden no longer has the mental acuity essential in the Office, and that Mr Trump is a deranged simpleton.....saying that might get be banned for being offensive....haha

I worry that President Biden no longer has the mental acuity essential in the Office, and that Mr Trump is a deranged simpleton.....saying that might get be banned for being offensive....haha I honestly wish that I could believe Trump was just a deranged simpleton. Unfortunately it is far worse than that, he is a dictator in waiting who appeals to the lowest common denominator of the dangerously under-educated, overly religious, racist parts of America, which counts for most southern states and a decent part of the rust belt, which are almost enough to get him across the line.
He is going out of his way with the help of his GOP brown shirts to make the situation at the southern border worse and preventing a bi-partisan bill to improve it from getting through the Senate, because if things improve it would be a 'win for the other side', his words. He is literally putting his own political ambitions over the needs of the country.
He and the GOP spent years either preventing moderates from getting onto the Supreme Court or actively stacking it with unqualified religious bigots and that has led to abortion bans across the nation, with some states threatening to jail doctors and pregnant women for 99 years. FFS Alabama just the other day declared that an unfertilised embryo is a person, so if a doctor was to implant several into a woman in order to start a pregnancy and either it was unsuccessful or only one child was conceived that doctor could be held responsible for the deaths of the unsuccessful embryos. Every hospital in the state has stopped these procedures with immediate effect. So in effect you have women who don't want babies being forced to have them and women who desperately do want babies unable to do so. How long do you think it will take for the religious nut jobs to declare the same in other states? How long before it comes to the SC and a national policy is enforced on less backward states?
The guy admires Putin, Xi and even Kim Jong Un, none of whom are people that should be looked up to and are all responsible for human rights abuses that put the Israelis to shame. He has even declared himself that he will be a dictator 'only on day one'. Some say it was tongue-in-cheek, but I'm not so sure and I'm also not too sure that he would be able stop after the first day. He is after revenge for his loss in 2020 and is taking aim at Biden and the press already, with only Fox out of the main news (sic) outlets likely to be spared his wrath. (BTW it's worth having at look for the former Fox anchor Tucker Carlson's interview with Putin and his report from Russia. It is beyond parody).
Ageist? Nah, I just think that the dearth of talent in a country of 340m people that only leaves the choice of two 80 year olds is an issue that needs to be addressed if the country has any hope of pulling itself back from the precipice.

For goodness sake, Neil! I don't necessarily disagree with some of what you say, but as we are in broad agreement, I do not seek to open division between us by debating the specific issues to which you draw attention; it is healthier for democracy for people to simply "agree to disagree" as appropriate, rather than allow themselves to be forced to adopt positions purely on the basis of their being contrary to those held by the opposition.
This failure (to agree to disagree) is a fundamental weakness in our democratic process, a weakness which leads to the emergence of the likes of Trump who, as you say, ponders to the politically illiterate - the other simpletons.
As to how the situation can be "addressed" is another matter, upon which I don't feel qualified to comment, except perhaps to suggest that any solution is likely to test our attachment to democracy at its basic level.

Sorry if I came across as being in any way critical of you or your posts on this thread, that wasn't my intention.
As two people that have argued numerous times over politics over the last few years it nice to actually find some common (ish) ground. As with Martin on the Middle East thread just because we disagree on some subjects doesn't mean we are enemies and in most cases we both want the best for everyone, no matter what, but often see different routes to that same objective.
Have a great weekend and hopefully celebrate 3 much needed points. See that's something we really can agree on.
