www.theguardian.com/politics/2023/nov/21/protesters-iain-duncan-smith-tory-scum-reasonable-court-rulesTwo protesters were “reasonable” in calling Iain Duncan Smith “Tory scum” outside the Conservative party conference, the high court has ruled, in a rejection of an attempt to overturn their acquittal. Lord Justice Popplewell and Justice Fordham said no fault in law was made by a senior district judge last November in finding Ruth Wood, 52, and Radical Haslam, 30, not guilty of using threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour with intent. In response to a request for a judicial review from the director of public prosecutions, the high court found that Judge Goldspring, who is also described as a chief magistrate, had made the important finding that “the use of Tory scum was to highlight the policies” of Duncan Smith, and that this was relevant to the “reasonableness of the conduct” in relation to the rights of freedom of expression and assembly.

You would think he would be used to it after all these years of Tory misrule.

What nonsense! I recommend that anyone who supports this decision uses the same word against:
(a) A policeman, or
(b) A member of the judiciary..
and await the consequences.

Player: What would you do if I called you a c***?
Ref: I'd send you off.
P: What if I thought you were a c***?
R: I can't do anything about your thoughts.
P: Great, in that case I think you're a c***.
Technically anyone is allowed to express an opinion, no matter how offensive. We are all entitled to our opinions and being a free country we are still allowed to express them, however in the real world there are consequences that run alongside our freedoms, responsibilities that come with our rights. No-one believes that this footballer would get away with that, for starters using that word 3 times would get him sent off for using foul and abusive language even if it wasn't actually aimed at anyone.
To be honest if I were to call someone down the pub scum I would more than likely regret it, however if I were to be arrested and subsequently called a police officer scum I doubt very much that it would lead to any further sanctions.

As ever, Neil, you are essentially correct, but I'm not too sure that your view squares with the "hate language" advocates of the vociferous woke Left!

I'm as woke and left wing as they come owd lad and I will fight with all my heart to keep free speech and freedom of expression, however I will also support anyone who refuses to give a platform to those who spout hate speech. No-one would get away with being openly racist, sexist, anti-semitic or even anti-islamic on here and quite rightly so. Facebook has reasonably robust structures in place to keep the very worst off there too. If Theatre Severn were to refuse to allow a racist to appear there many would accuse them of de-platforming, but just because someone has a right to have and express an opinion, no matter how vile, they don't have any right to any platform to spout it from.
