Only last month, following the decision to scrap phase two of HS2, Cameron said the decision “will help to fuel the views of those who argue that we can no longer think or act for the long term as a country; that we are heading in the wrong direction”. And Katy Balls points out that bringing back David Cameron would not fit with Sunak’s claim to be a “change” prime minister overturning 30 years of failed consensus. In his speech to the Tory conference last year Sunak said:
We’ve had thirty years of a political system which incentivises the easy decision, not the right one.
Thirty years of vested interests standing in the way of change.
Thirty years of rhetorical ambition which achieves little more than a short-term headline.
This seemed to be aimed at Cameron as much as Tony Blair, and went down badly with the Cameron camp.
The Guardian.

I’ve made my points on the other thread. It all stinks and takes us backwards in every sense of the word. I feel for the talented back benchers (there must be some) who do t even get a look in. If he’s the best the Tories can find then heaven help us.

Cameron is the sole architect of many of the ills that have befallen this country since 2010 and Labour should make significant play of such.

Brexiteers won’t be pleased. Maybe it will help us repair some of the damage Brexit has caused.

Brexiteers won’t be pleased. Maybe it will help us repair some of the damage Brexit has caused. Under Sunak generally there UK has indicated its now less likely to diverge from EU regulations and follow the same regulatory standards, rather than the divergence some brexit supporters wanted from a “hard Brexit” - latest is this on carbon tariffs www.ft.com/content/f9c824e4-6f3d-4aaa-94da-6b95b63e1512?segmentId=114a04fe-353d-37db-f705-204c9a0a157bSo Cameron coming back would seem to maintain that approach rather than say appointing David Frost or a strong brexitier to the roll Guess one of the tests will be if any strong brexit supporters defect and join the reform party, or whether the softer Brexit is something Tory MPs can go into the next election supporting

I thought we’d got rid of the Bullingdon Boys . But oh no , like a bad penny one comes roaring back . What a bloody mess . We now have Nadine Dorries taking every opportunity to boot Sunak . God knows what Braverman will get up to on the back benches and Andrea Jenkins from the ERG (which I think once boasted the likes of Mark Francois to give you an idea of how she thinks ) handing in a letter of no confidence in Sunak . Add in the Brexit lot who aren’t at all happy Cameron has been appointed and the fragrant Esther McVey appointed as Minister without Portfolio who will be campaigning on a anti woke agenda and you wonder what on earth is happening. Surely Sunak didn’t think this reshuffle would claw back his disastrous standing in the polls . Mind you , it could have been worse - Farage could have been offered a job advising on how to stop the small boats .

Hopefully that gurning toad Farage will get bitten by something extremely poisonous and preferably deadly while in the Australian jungle. I might even consider finding a religion if that were happen

www.theguardian.com/politics/2023/nov/15/david-cameron-urged-to-disclose-the-jobs-he-gave-up-to-make-cabinet-returnDavid Cameron is facing calls to disclose the businesses he was working for before being appointed as foreign secretary, after the Foreign Office refused to reveal which jobs and clients he was giving up to take on the role. The former prime minister has had a series of jobs since he left No 10 in 2016, including lobbying the government on behalf of a controversial, now-collapsed, financial firm, Greensill, which led to a scandal over his influence. He also worked for a gene-sequencing company, Illumina, which won a £123m government contract during the pandemic, and an AI firm, Afiniti, from which he resigned in 2021. An e-commerce company called ChaChing appeared recently to have listed Cameron as a member of its advisory board, but the page in question is no longer available. The company also counts Philip Hammond, the former chancellor, as an adviser. Cameron also appears to have been helping to drum up support for a controversial port project in Sri Lanka, which is part of the flagship belt and road initiative of the Chinese president, Xi Jinping. However, the Foreign Office has refused to publish the jobs Cameron resigned from on Monday when he was offered the position of foreign secretary – or whether he has worked for any foreign governments or state entities since 2016. Because he is entering the government without being an MP or an existing peer, there is no record of his current financial interests. He will have to declare his interests as a member of the House of Lords, but will not have to reveal any former employment up to the point he entered parliament as a peer.

To his credit his first trip is to Kiev. Perhaps he's trying to atone for being a failure last time in government?

Great idea, Boris goes to Kiev, on a one way ticket.

www.theguardian.com/business/2023/nov/22/hmrc-david-cameron-greensill-flightsTax officials are understood to be examining whether David Cameron failed to fully disclose taxable perks such as flights on private planes when he worked for the collapsed lender Greensill Capital, the Guardian can reveal. In particular, officials are said to be looking at a number of flights that took off or landed near his house in Oxfordshire and also in Cornwall, where the foreign secretary has a holiday home. They are also examining an offshore trust that it is understood was created by Greensill to pay him extra benefits. It comes amid wider concerns that the process for appointing the former prime minister to the House of Lords, and other background checks for his cabinet appointment, were rushed through in a bid to keep the details of Rishi Sunak’s reshuffle secret.

www.theguardian.com/politics/2024/jan/27/david-camerons-activities-at-greensill-matter-of-interest-in-wider-inquiry-sfo-gfgDavid Cameron’s activities at the scandal-hit Greensill Capital finance company are a “matter of interest” in a wider investigation by the Serious Fraud Office, the Guardian understands. The SFO, which investigates and prosecutes fraud, bribery and corruption in the UK, has questioned interview subjects about the UK foreign secretary’s involvement with the now-defunct company, sources claim. The Guardian understands that Cameron’s activities have been discussed in sensitive interviews with witnesses in the long-running SFO investigation. Senior figures who worked at Greensill have been questioned as part of the SFO’s broader inquiry into “suspected fraud, fraudulent trading and money laundering” at companies within the Gupta Family Group Alliance (GFG) steel, energy and commodities empire, an investigation announced in 2021. Witnesses have been questioned on the role Cameron played in promoting Greensill to investors and his engagement with and promotion of GFG.
