I think the Lib Dems will push hard in Shrewsbury after gaining seats at the last Shropshire Council elections and success up the road in North Shrophire The narrative will be that only the Lib Dems can beat the Tories, which to be honest is true in a lot of constituencys At the 2019 General election the Conservatives got 31,000 votes in Shrewsbury and Atcham, Labour 2nd on 19,800 and Lib Dems 3rd on just under 6000 so on those results Labour seemed best placed to be the main challenger to the sitting MP That said the 19,800 Labour got was 5% down on the previous election and Lib Dems were up 2.5% and a similar set of results took place at the 2021 Local elections. Think without some kind of agreement between opposition parties its likely the Conservative will retain Shrewsbury at the next election - or if they do lose it will be a pretty major shock and indicate a big problem for the Conservatives nationally. North Shropshire obviously saw a big swing to Lib Dems from Conservatives but as a by election the opposition parties could focus resources on the seat which they can't always do in a general election and just have to target certain seats. Local Councillor Alex Wagner has already been chosen as the Lib Dem general election candidate; Labour have yet to announce theirs. Julia Buckley stood last time and is now Labour Group Leader at Shropshire Council so probably most likely to be chosen again

In the absence of any League one football to occupy me I have had a look at the political allegiance of the County Councillors that represent Shrewsbury. They were elected in 2021 so is the last significant set of elections in Shrophire. The tally according to my maths is Lib Dem 5 Labour 5 Green 2 Tory. 2
Im.not sure what conclusions can be drawn other than the anti Tory vote appears to be greater than the Tory vote.
Of course if maybe a reflection on Shropshire Council and have no relevance to the General Election

I have been elected to the local parish and town councils. As you all know I am a Labour supporter, but to see Starmer milking it like it was his policies that led to all the Labour gains is sickening. He backtracked on every one of his 10 pledges as soon as he won the vote. I don't trust the man. Just dropped into the Politics thread, and saw this: congratulations to you, Neil, upon your election - now,the real work starts!

It's only the Parish Council, but hopefully I can make a small difference. I have a degree of sympathy for the Tory candidate in neighbouring Donnington, he does a hell of a lot of voluntary work in the area and has done so for years. If he'd stood as an independent I have no doubt he would have got reelected, but the Tories are toxic right now.

Tend to agree with that; in any event, I am sure you will make a difference, otherwise why would we bother!
