One of the things I enjoy most about being an atheist is that I can treat every religion and their leaders with equal contempt.
Stories passed down, mostly via Chinese Whispers, by people who didn't know where the sun went at night have no place in the 21st century, but instead we have religious (sic) politicians using their various religions to exert control over the masses. It's happening in India, the US, South America, the Far East. They realise that the younger generations are far more connected to the outside world and to be able to exert any level of control over them they need to give them someone to hate and a reason to hate them. That's why people like Modi, Netanyahu, Bolsonaro (until recently), Orban and the Trump led GOP in the US are now pushing their religious intolerance into schools.

As a fellow atheist, Neil, I find it difficult to raise my dislike to the level of "contempt".....I simply look upon the believers in all religions' irrational fairy-tales with mild amusement, tinged with some sympathy. Now, where is that bolt of lightning.....? All that said, I refer to Clarke's third law: "any sufficiently advanced technology can seem to be magic", so I do not rule anything out......
