Really, thought it was the holiday Inn . Well at least they'll get some good old English charm in there. It used to be the town's premier hotel, how times have changed.

Closing to get ready to take immigrants....thoughts? I await the Town Councils response?! Edit: Also should this maybe be on the Politics board? Considering the way this thread is going go?

Is the plan: rake in the money in what probably would have been a fairly quiet time, then a refurb?
There's a hotel they have been using in Stoke for months that the council feels is too dilapadated to use and have been lobbying government about. Local councils don't seem to get a say.
Owners of below par hotels throughout Britain will no doubt jump at this opportunity.

Ah I read about it in the Star but it didn’t say which hotel it was.

Sorry I’m a bit slow, what’s it got to do with RW? I was under the impression that RW was once associated with the Lion Hotel. Whoever is associated with the place, this is money coming in. Money talks, and it says "Give me some of that".

Lord Hill but don’t think the Lion 🦁 Fair enough. My error. Got a feeling he used to own The Wingfield Arms at Montford Bridge but may have imagined it?

Last month the BBC said the gov't were paying £7million a day on hotels, I expect that will rise further now. It's an absolute disgrace at the best of times, but even more so in the current climate
Regarding the Lion, in a way you can't blame the owners, they have guaranteed income for the next 12 months (at least) and by the sound of it are getting a nice bonus which will pay for a refurbishment (and the place needs it). However for the town it's a loss, normally the people who stop there are are visiting the town and spending money in shops, restaurants, cafes, etc. so there's an impact there. I'm not sure for certain but I've read that in other hotels it has led to job losses as many features of the hotels are closed, e.g restaurants are closed as the food is supplied by an agency.
Plus, and I know this is going to sound very snobby/small town mentality but this is a historical hotel in the heart of the town, it should be a major feature of the town but is now closed to the general public and houses immigrants. This of course is no fault of the immigrants, it's the failing of the gov't.

Here's an article from the Shropshire Star in 2015. www.shropshirestar.com/business/shropshire-business/2015/05/07/new-owners-vow-to-restore-glory-of-shrewsburys-lion-hotel/The 59-bedroom Grade I listed hotel has been purchased by a Thai investment firm, which says it is also looking to market Shrewsbury as a holiday destination to the Asian market. Sanjay Singh, managing director of the Fico Corporation, said they would be looking to renovate the hotel's 59 rooms and public areas. He said: "We are very pleased with this acquisition. As a heritage Grade I listed property the hotel has a very impressive history and it is our desire to refurbish the property over next few months and restore Lion Hotel to its glorious past." The future of the hotel has been uncertain since it was put up for sale in 2011 with a price tag of £2.95 million. That was later reduced to £2.495m. The 16th century Wyle Cop hotel is said to be where Charles Darwin stayed on the eve of departing on HMS Beagle for the voyage which would eventually see him produce "On the Origin of Species". Mr Singh said he believed the region would appeal to potential tourists and customers from Asia. But 7 years later the hotel is still run down according to cabanas2017.

Very little seems to have changed at the Lion Hotel since it was bought. It's a shame as when my wife and I lived in town centre I used to enjoy nipping in and sitting on the sofas in front of the fire downstairs with a pint (hot chocolate for the Mrs). Always felt like a bit of a hidden gem.
I was also there for a Christmas do last year and spent a fair bit of time in the little snug bar a bit further up. It's "tired" maybe but I wouldn't say "run down" (no idea what the rooms are like mind). Given its location and what a stunning building it is it should be a license to print money, especially with foreign tourists, so I agree it is a bit of a shame to see it being used this way instead of at the centre of the town's tourism offering.
I guess if the money does give them something to spend on renovations then there could be a silver lining but there's just something incredibly distasteful about the constant stream of businesses with snouts in the trough every time there's a crisis. You'd like to think that people might finally get the message about "investing to save" in properly resourced public services instead of continuously handing over public cash to the private sector but given we are now being served up reheated austerity rhetoric from 12 years ago it seems unlikely. Seeing hospital trusts paying £2.5k for a shift from an agency nurse (of which the vast majority probably goes to some parasite middleman employment agent for doing sod all) whilst we simultaneously play chicken with the NHS over striking for pay is utterly baffling but people only seem to care about "waste" when it's directly in the public sector.
