But he’s making money available for the NRW despite it not being agreed yet oh and can’t wait for the disruption with a new level crossing yards away from the Island at Gobowen allowing trains to travel the 3 miles into Oswestry? Can’t see that ever happening. Maybe a rail stop at The Meadows next? The plan for Gobowen to Oswestry involves a bridge over/under the by-pass. I don't remember which.

Thanks but even less likely to happen then.

Sunak, a short term politician pretending to make long term decisions that he probably won't be around to have to deliver on. All he's after is quick savings to make surprise bribes in the budget. But he's messing around with the livlehoods of the construction workers who will no doubt be laid off with none of Sunak's "wish list" of projects actually ready to start for years?

I see that one of the lines he announced as going to be reopened ( to loud applause 🙄) was within 24 hours removed from the list !! Should put a copy of the “new” projects list in a time capsule so that someone in the future can tick of those that actually happened - I suspect like the “new hospitals” - very few 🤔

What I don't quite understand is how Sunak and the Government are able to set this process in track without first going back to Parliament to repeal the Bill which established the governments powers to build the - High Speed Rail (West Midlands to Crewe) Act 2021 - which was also part of the 2019 Conservative manifesto. The decision to stop the project appears to have happened in a small circle of people with no chance for MP's to vote on it, which for something as big as this issue seems a bit odd especially as it limits any future governments ability to review or restart the HS2 link between Birmingham and Manchester

This is certainly a contentious subject, but I also don't understand why the decision is not the subject of new primary legislation.
I am disappointed by the decision to cancel the next stage of the line, but can understand why it has been made, and yet not in agreement with it, nor the reasons stated. Frankly, I could almost write a book about the mistreatment of the railways over the last 90+ years, but it would bore non railway fans to death.

This is the most awful part, hundreds of lives destroyed without so much as a care. Be interesting just how much the Northern legs going to continue to cost with ZERO return. Compensation for the broken contracts already in place runs to 10s of millions.

Costs right down to the " dole" for the construction workers thrown out of work with only vague "wishllst" ideas of future projects.

The contracts to build the first phase of the line, including viaducts, tunnels, and stations at Euston and Old Oak Common, were signed off by the Treasury during lockdown, after the government approved the controversial £106bn project in February. February 2020 The prime minister, Boris Johnson, pledges to build HS2 despite costs allegedly rising to £106bn September 2020 Construction formally begins on Hs2, starting with the London-Birmingham leg. So Sunak signed it off. Now he's halted any expansion beyond B'ham. www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2023/nov/16/hs2-scandal-white-paper-rishi-sunak

Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water. www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2024/jan/06/labour-could-revive-hs2-northern-legs-after-government-fails-to-sell-off-landA Labour government will have the option of reviving the northern legs of the HS2 rail project, after it emerged it is very unlikely that any land bought by the government for the route will be sold off before the election. Keir Starmer has resisted calls to recommit to the northern phase of the project, surprisingly axed by Rishi Sunak in his Tory conference speech last year. The Labour leader has partly blamed the fact that the government was “already releasing land between Birmingham and Manchester” bought up for the route. However, sources have told the Observer it is extremely unlikely that any land purchased north of Birmingham will have been sold by the time a new government is in place.

www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2024/jan/10/hs2-cost-of-london-birmingham-line-rise-mpsThe estimated cost of the HS2 line from London to Birmingham has ballooned to as much as £66bn, the scheme’s executive chair has told MPs. Jon Thompson told the transport select committee on Wednesday that the current estimate for the first phase of the line could add “between £8bn and £10bn” to the current top-end estimate of £56.6bn.

Start by looking at how many make the journeys by plane because existing methods are not fast enough for them. That's how much money you have to provide a high speed alternative.
Maybe better to just have a low speed alternative and get freight onto the railways and off the roads. During the turn of the century floods, rail traffic to London picked it's way through the West Midlands, upgrade those for freight and free up space on the main lines?
