www.theguardian.com/politics/2022/nov/27/matt-hancock-im-a-celebrity-tiktok-votes-jungleDespite the criticism – or perhaps because of it – the former health secretary has won the backing of an unlikely crowd, lasting more than two weeks in the jungle and surviving eight eliminations to make it to the final today. Support from young TikTok users – boosted by a concerted effort from his PR team – appears to have been key to his on-screen success, according to public relations experts and political rivals. Over the past few days, before the final on ITV on Sunday evening, members of Hancock’s PR team were lobbying for votes on the app – encouraging people to vote for him repeatedly and giving them step-by-step instructions. One video, addressed to “team Matt”, said their mission was to “keep Matt in the jungle”. It added that they should “download the I’m a Celebrity... app and vote five times,” or call the voting number. “Always use all my votes to keep Matt in!” one TikTokker wrote in response. Another video was billed as a “step by step guide to keep Matt in the jungle” and showed someone scrolling through the app on their phone and voting for Hancock repeatedly. The TikTok campaign is not a breach of the rules: ITV’s website says viewers can vote up to five times each via the app, while those voting by text or phone can vote up to 600 times from a single number before it is deemed suspicious and unfair to the other contestants. But it is a deliberate strategy. Since 8 November, Hancock’s PR team has posted 24 videos of him on the app, all linked to his appearance in the jungle. He now has more than 77,000 followers and at least 511,800 likes across his official TikTok account, while videos of him overall have been watched 400 million times, according to TikTok’s internal data.

He’s found his level as, it would seem, have the people who follow him.
If this is what it takes to become a popular MP heaven help us all.

True, but the worrying thing is those people have the same number of votes as us in a general election, assuming they are over 18. Perhaps the day will soon arrive when they can vote on TikTok five times each for their preferred candidate.

A credible third, never knew what I really expected of him to be honest. He was quite robotic in parts, I gave up watching it about 6 or 7 nights ago.

I think I've caught about a couple of hours worth of snippets live over the last 20 or so years, usually if the kids were watching it in the front room when I walked in. Have I missed much?

If you wanted to know what sort of country/world we live in, this episode sums it up. This is a man who was at at the heart of decisions which cost lives and squandered billions whilst at the same time was having an affair, he should be held in the deepest contempt by the general public. But instead he goes on a tv show, claiming to want to connect with the public & raising awareness for dyslexia, and with the help of a PR company, he wins over plenty of people who seem to forget what he was involved with. And no doubt he will have raised his profile and make plenty of money out all of this.
People moan because some MP's appear to treat the general public with contempt, to be honest I'm starting to see why they do.

Can't you vote multiple times though? I guess "tiny minority" is wrong but I'm not having the "I'm a Celeb" results as a proxy for public opinion.

You could vote 5 times for free via the app, plus as many times as you’d like through the phone lines although that cost. Somebody should put an FOI request in for all phone calls made by his parliamentary office.
Also, once Hancock was knocked out the vote reopened between the final two with a further 5 free votes, all these count towards the 12 million.
What’s been interesting is the number of people that have had a pop at Hancock not for his care home abuse, rule breaking with his bit on the side, or involvement in dodgy PPE contracts, but because he enforced lockdowns that meant they couldn’t see their loved ones. The vast majority who no doubt (as most did) supported the lockdown at the time. People trying to rewrite their own history.

www.theguardian.com/politics/2022/dec/07/matt-hancock-will-not-stand-conservatives-next-electionMatt Hancock is to step down as an MP, sparking an immediate row over whether the former health secretary has quit voluntarily or been forced out after appearing as a contestant on a reality TV show. The West Suffolk MP, who lost the Conservative whip after spending three weeks in Australia to film ITV’s I’m a Celebrity … Get Me Out of Here!, wrote to Rishi Sunak to say he wanted to seek “new ways for me to communicate” with the public. In the letter, Hancock said he had spoken to the Conservatives’ chief whip, Simon Hart, last week, and been told the whip would be restored in time, “but that is now not necessary” – meaning he will sit as an independent until the next election. However, there were suggestions that Hancock, whose spokesperson had said a week earlier that he would stay as an MP, was in effect being pushed out by a local constituency association which no longer supported him.

Matt Hancock is planning a series of “serious documentaries” on assisted dying and dyslexia in his life after public office, The Telegraph understands.
Allies of the former health secretary said he believes he should put his public platform to good use and educate the public about political issues after his appearances on reality TV shows.
Mr Hancock last week announced that he plans to stand down from Parliament at the next election, telling Rishi Sunak he had “discovered a whole world of possibilities” outside Westminster, including “new ways … to communicate with people of all ages and from all backgrounds”.
He is understood to have received offers from major broadcasters and is considering a new career as a documentary presenter.

Well he certainly knows enough about ‘assisted dying’ and care homes to make him an expert.
The next load of rubbish from Netflix I presume.

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-11525291/ITV-woos-Matt-Hancock-following-former-Health-Secretarys-success-Im-celeb.htmlITV bosses want to sign Matt Hancock to star in more of their programmes following his success on I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! Chiefs have held discussions about which projects they can hire him for in a bid to stop rivals taking him away. ITV sources say they are ‘thrilled’ they signed him for the jungle because he turned into an unexpected ratings winner. One told The Mail on Sunday: ‘Matt did the unthinkable and won over the viewers. He was the talk of the UK for almost three weeks and ITV are keen to capitalise on that. He also had a very unexpected appeal to younger viewers… something that ITV bosses are particularly interested in.’
Ideas mooted include a documentary on his campaign for all children to be screened for dyslexia at primary school, as well as presenting roles. If this doesn't send a message about the abject failures of the education system over recent years, then nothing does. This country is full of 'influencers', vloggers, bloggers and young viewers of such intellectually demanding programmes as Love Island, the Only Way is Essex, Made in Chelsea, The Real Housewives of Cheshire, the Kardashians etc, etc.

It’s a sad situation when a failed politician responsible for so much grief in people’s lives is the best ITV can come up with and doesn’t make anyone optimistic about the future.
His ex family must be shaking their heads in disbelief and be getting ready to emigrate I know I would be.

On the contrary. www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-11524595/Hancocks-wife-urged-stand-parliamentary-seat-Im-Celeb-star-steps-down.htmlMatt Hancock's estranged wife Martha is being urged to stand for his seat when he steps down at the next Election. The former Health Secretary’s wife has kept a low profile after her husband was caught on camera kissing his aide during the pandemic. But the mother-of-three is said to be active in local politics and has won support among local Conservatives. Tory party figures are encouraging her to stand after Mr Hancock announced that he will step down.

Both Kate Griffiths (Burton) and Natalie Elphicke (Dover) took over the seats of their disgraced husbands, so there are precedents.

If he had any sense of decency, he would have donated all the fee to good causes in his constituency which he failed to represent during his time in Australia.
