I really can’t summon up any interest in the champions league final ( nor FA cup finals come to think of it) am I just getting a bit Victor Meldrew in my old age. In years gone by I would eagerly rush to be home with a few beers and a takeaway and really be behind Liverpool, Forest, Villa but now I have very little interest, to me it is just predominantly a bunch of foreign players representing an ‘English’ club against another foreign team just hasn’t got the same excitement or interest for a supporter of a league one side as it used to. It is the same with the FA Cup can’t remember the last one I watched, used to be very enjoyable watching all the build up and the interest was there watching Spurs v Coventry, Wimbledon v Liverpool, Sunderland v Leeds etc but now I can’t be bothered to watch. Don’t know if it is just since the start of Sky/Money that my interest started to wane but clubs and a lot of players seem to be out of touch with reality, I would never miss ‘Match of the day’ at one time now I rarely watch which in recent years has made me message my son when watching some England games to ask him who a certain player is and what club does he play for. Is anyone else feeling the same or is it me being a miserable old sod.

I think certainly with the Champions’ League I don’t get too excited about it. It’s one group of multinationals vs. another group of multinationals. And they’re all best pals because they were filming the same advert for Nike last month. Not like seeing a largely British team against a largely Spanish / Italian / Dutch team anymore.
Maybe it’s a consequence of money, but I think a bigger turn-off for top level football is the way it’s all so serious. It’s no longer light-entertainment, something to enjoy away from the stresses of life.
No longer do we have Mark Lawrenson and Alan Hansen filling in time between the golf clubs, we have pundits and experts who are fuming, raging… I’ll take your shocking and raise it with a disgusted etc etc.
Just feels like WWF, everything is blown up out of all proportion, fake drama and they know who’s going to win beforehand anyway 😂

Disagree. Don’t think nationality of players should come into it. In football terms the champions league has produced some of the best and most dramatic football. Thinking Liverpool coming from 3-0 down to beat Barcelona 4-3 on aggregate. Tottenham scoring with the last kick of the game to send them through to a champions league final against a young exciting Ajax side. And this season Real Madrid scoring two goals in added time to take their semi final to extra time and eventually win it. Football is about entertainment and I feel this competition has brought that over the years.

Is anyone else feeling the same or is it me being a miserable old sod. I'm very much the same, it's usually the same teams involved and that generates little interest for me. I support the Town and Arsenal so Europe is of no interest as The Gunners aren't good enough to win a European trophy . But I love the FA cup as some of my happiest memories as a Town fan have been watching the Town beat a top side and getting a prime spot on MOTD. I know what you mean about the England squad it's often a case of who the hell is he?

Feel exactly the same to be honest.
The Frankfurt v Rangers final was about the most invested I've been in a televised game for years and although entertainment wise it was dross to be honest, it kinda harped back to a bygone era where you could get an entirely unpredictable match up in the final and it meant everything to win for both clubs.
I think the TV/media has a lot to answer for. Taking the Champions League off free to air TV was a mistake. Same thing has since happened with the Ashes where it feels a series can seemingly come around almost out of the blue such is the little interest it seems to garner in the public psyche.
Everything seems to have been dumbed down to cater for the younger generation. The pundits are a tick box exercise, you know who every single one of them supports and very few of them have the ability to remain impartial. The BBC's obsession over 'fantasy team' and who have been given what attributes on the new FIFA game fries me to death.
And there seems to be no perspective either. An arrogance that the game is now the best there is, best there was and best it'll ever be and every reasonably successful team or player is now considered an all time great as no one can seem to recall anything prior to 1992.
Old man rant over.

Anyone know why Grizzly used his burner account to start the thread? Jesus get over yourself ffs. I have no interest in anything that is over hyped, football, tv, music. Football at the higher levels is so over hyped these days that I turned off from it years ago. I much prefer the European and FA Cups at the early stages before the usual predictable names take over. Wont be long before i will take an interest in the preliminary rounds of next seasons Euro tournaments, they will start very soon I'd guess.

To be honest it’s no different than as long as I can remember following football (around 20 years). Don’t believe it, take a look at the list of finals and tell me how many truly stick in your mind - en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_UEFA_Champions_League_finals Sure you get the odd surprise team getting to the final, and the odd absolute classic final for the ages, but by and large the games come and go and are mostly forgotten by all but fans (and haters) of the teams that take part. But that’s no different from international football, domestic cup football, non league football, Sunday league football…

Gotta love 'em! Yeah, who remembers the classic Bayern - St Etienne final of '76, or PSV's tense 0-0 draw with Benfica in '88, or the 0-0 Juventus - Milan cracker in '03? I agree with samharvey. As much as I dislike the overhyping of the Champions League, it has produced some of the best football entertainment in recent years. Which is what it's about when you don't particularly support either of the teams, isn't it? We can moan about multinational teams but our domestic league is full of them & our clubs are foreign owned anyway (who knew Ipswich are owned by an Arizona pension fund!?). No, it's not "real" and I'm happy supporting Town and popping along to watch a non-league game now and then. But I can watch it like I watch any sport I'm not directly engaged in and the same criterion applies - is it entertaining? Yes? OK, I'll watch.

I will, of course, be cheering on multinational Real Madrid (a club I dislike vehemently) against multinational Liverpool (a club I dislike even more). That's the magic of this Cup.

Is it just being Shrewsbury fans? "Footballs about entertainment"? Not so much for Shrewsbury fans, it's more about grind and survival - that's what makes things like beating Charlton in the play-off semis, or scoring the first goal at Anfield so special for Shrewsbury fans.

Looking at the stats, Real Madrid have won the trophy an incredible 13 times.
Nearest competitors, Bayern Munich & AC Milan a mere 7 and Liverpool a measly 6.

Admittedly that is the view of someone who thinks it's a farce for the same tennis players to keep turning up and playing each other. I suppose it's best for me to just ignore it all (though that's difficult with the beeb's love of tennis). Leave this sort of stuff in football, etc. to the people who want to pay for sky and sit in front of the telly drinking disgusting lager.
Rant over!

Not taking anything away from Real but they did help their total by winning the first FIVE tournaments (and I thing another couple in the first 10 years). Going to he way ahead of the rest for a very long time due to that.

I agree but I don't think entertainment is the only yard stick in which we compare today with the 'good old days'. I think it's entirely plausible to consider modern top level football to be predictable and devoid of character but at the same time conceding it's actually still entertaining most of the time. Watching the re-run of Euro 96 during lockdown was an eye-opener. I've always considered that the 'peak' for me as a young football fan but it's fair to stay compared to the standard of what we see today, it looks League One at best. But world class entertainment and the nauseating slogan 'best league in the world' has been achieved at a cost and to the detriment of many other things. Football clubs becoming business portfolios for wealthy petrostates and investor groups. Increased ticket prices eroding the working class, TV subscriptions, sterile match day experiences. The first million-pound a week player in the backdrop of a global pandemic. I'd take the purity of early-mid 90s football and happily sacrifice the standard and entertainment we see today. Del Piero and Figo over Mbappe and Neymar any day of the week.

There's the football I actively watch (lower league and non-league) and there's the top level stuff where they play to the same rules but everything else about it is different. I'm not wasting time complaining that it's not what it was (well, not too often anyway ), I'll just enjoy it for what it is (or not, it's deadly dull a lot of the time). I enjoy watching American Football but dislike its franchise system, its rapacious commerciality and it being a rich man's plaything - on and off the pitch. I can enjoy top level football in a similar way and just appreciate the high levels of skill and excitement when they happen, while still hating many aspects of it.

I think there is not much point in comparing sides from different eras as things like training, tactics, nutrition and the quality of pitches are so different. As already said on this thread no doubt many of the great players of yesteryear would have also among the top players of the current era if they were playing now. As for Saturday's game I think it will not be a disappointment like so many previous finals have been. Real do not seem to do boring and could well find themselves down again before kicking into gear and attempting to make another comeback. I think the Real midfield will struggle at first against Liverpool's high pressing and high tempo game but who would bet against them if they are in touch near the end of the game? I take the point about both sides being multinational - it does take some of the national rivalry away. I would like to see a rule that Premier League sides have to start every game with at least 6 British - qualified players to encourage better progression for British players from the lower leagues and to help the British national teams.
