I do wonder if Wrexham was the only Welsh candidate for City status. I can think of plenty of more deserving and historical towns.

Regarding the ‘city’ status: ‘The Platinum Jubilee civic honours competition required applicants to show their cultural heritage and royal links as well as how their local identity and communities meant they deserved to be granted city status’. This was their application and reasoning: Wrexham - North Wales Established in 1864, Wrexham Football Club is among the oldest professional football clubs in the UK and is owned by Hollywood stars - the actor Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, creator of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia The area, with a population of 61,603, is home to the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, a Unesco World Heritage site Compare it to Bangor - Northern Ireland Due to its location at the mouth of the Belfast Lough, Bangor, with a population of 61,011, was a key site for the Allies during the Second World War In May 1944, Supreme Commander of Allied Forces Dwight D Eisenhower, who later became US president, gave a speech to 30,000 assembled troops in Bangor shortly before ships left for Normandy and the D-Day landings The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh visited Bangor Castle in 1961 and, after lunching at the Royal Ulster Yacht Club that day, the duke part in a regatta race So Bangor gained their status on their connections to World War II, the Royal family and former US Presidents leading troops into battle. Wrexham gained theirs on two Yank actors that have owned a non league football club for five minutes, and a bridge!!! Must’ve been loads of Welsh applicants given that criteria?! To play devils advocate here...Bangor has nothing going for it anymore. I used to chase the girls down by the marina there in my youth. But now the high street is dead with closed shops and it's full of drugs. The similarities with Wrexham are uncanny! The sympathy vote theory stands fast with these two cities. P. s. did someone tell them the Pontcysyllte aquaduct is not near Wrexham?Afraid it is. It’s in what was the County Borough of Wrexham now the City of Wrexham I guess… Like saying Wimbledon isn’t in London 👍 Interestingly Thomas Telford built it after successfully building a similar one (smaller) on the Newport Shrewsbury canal at Longden on Tern which is still there though dry but ambitious plans to renovate…..

Of course. You’re welcome to join us. The size of the crowd and volume of noise may intimidate you, though. We have played before over 52000 at Anfield this season, so crowds don’t intimidate us. We , along with Bristol Rovers, still share the record attendance for the L2 Play-off Final - 61589.

Ah but ….. we’re owned by fellas who see everything they touch turn to gold. Right, about to check out of the St Albans travel lodge and head to the fanszone. What are you lot up to today? I'm sure there is still some other pub league football to take in on a park pitch somewhere closer than Wembley for those that want football at that level. Uncanny that the pub league FA Cup final is taking place on a sunday really 😀

Unlikely that Bromley can do a North Ferriby, but hope springs eternal.
Failing that, Mullin, Palmer or Davies to be red carded!

Inexplicable that Rhyl wasn't short listed then! Could have given Wrexham a serious challenge.

hard to believe Shrewsbury was once in the top 10 most population places in England I've no idea where we are ranked now

hard to believe Shrewsbury was once in the top 10 most population places in England I've no idea where we are ranked now Shrewsbury is growing all the time, not for the better in my opinion. Shrewsbury doesn't need to be called a city to have what it takes, but suffers from being in the Midlands with all the other cities already. If Shrewsbury was in Wales it would no doubt be a city.
Stuff City status, what Shewsbury needs is a new hospital and the A5 to have those dreadful roundabouts changed to motorway style - drive through Telford on the M54 and notice the difference when you get to Shrewsbury.

Both would also be on my list. I would also include Llangollen and Caernarfon.

Handing out City status to towns is like the New Years Honours list. The more you hand out the less value it has.

I think City status is perfect for the place. I always pronounce it "Rexham" as its the arse hole of the universal. Now it will be called " Rexham s**ty" which is even better
