Since when has 'County Durham' been a city and not a county?

I think the โcityโ definition is pretty flexible when it comes to the City of Culture award. However, I believe Wakefield is a city. It certainly has a cathedral.

Wakefield has the Hepworth Gallery, the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, the Theatre Royal, the Coal Mining Museum. Oh and Wakefield Prison. Wrexham has a prison and the Caia Park Estate.

Oh no thereโs lots going on in and around. A new centre is being built, thereโs a lovely theatre, plus all the things listed by someone earlier in the thread.
Definitely better than Wrexham!!!
I doubt Wakefield will get it though as itโs not long since Hull had it.

Donโt get me started on the City of Culture process (having been involved in a bid process.. Anyway, anyone interested in music may be aware of the FOCUS festival going on in Wrexham currently featuring Richard Hawley, Kelly Lee Owens, Gruff Rhys, Tim Burgess, BC Camplight, loads more plus film, art etc. Pretty superb event.

Perhsps a good thing that Telford are not vying with Shrewsbury for this "city" of culture thing.
Do they go for somewhere that needs nore culture? Has Chester ever been "it"?

It's a sympathy vote given to terribly run-down places so they get investment to boost tourism.
Londonderry won it when it was a warzone (it still is). Dundee and Swansea were shortlisted the year Hull won it.
Fully expect Wrexham to be up there for the award. That place is just as bleak as the previous.
