Anyone ever been away from over the festive period to catch some summer sun. whats it like ? Can you reccomend anywhere ? Is it any different abroad over the xmas period ? Is everywhere open or closed up ? I'm thinking of booking something last minute to surprise Mrs TS, her face will be a picture when i tell her were off to Tenerife instead of catching up with her entire family that she hasn't seen for ages on xmas day

Went to Lanzarote once for Xmas - and have to agree with Aleix. It's OK if you just decide you're not really doing Christmas I guess. Christmas in Japan is weird.

I spent Xmas in Australia last year. It was great, but wierd, as all their decorations showed snow, and bleak winter stuff, but in reality, it was 37 degrees and hot.
Would do it again, definitely

It's a regular working day. Strangely everyone eats KFC - there are lines a mile long outside the KFC stores Christmas Eve is the number one date night of the year for couples. Japanese Christmas cake is a strawberry & cream sponge (big improvement if you ask me). There are some places where they put up lights and the department stores are decorated, but often they don't quite get it (Santa on the cross a famous example). The big department store near me has a beautiful tree decorated with teddy bears - unfortunately they have hung them by little ropes tied around their necks

So its not a celebration to the extent it is here...
I just find it so interesting what other countries get up to!

Yeah, not really a celebration, more just a minor commercial event. New Year's Day is the big celebration here - similar to our Christmas in that they mostly stay home with the family, eat special food, give presents to kids (only money though), go to the shrine or temple, many shops etc closed (but by no means all).

i spent last year in cyprus (funnily enough) and it was ok. didn't feel very christmassy but then things haven't been the same since i found out about the big man!! back in the UK this year which looks more like xmas, feels cold like xmas (have I mentioned it ****ing freezing today ) and i would rather be there this year, sitting on my decorated balcony, stuffing something (face, turkey, missus etc)

Christmas in Sweden is pretty good. We have always had a white Christmas and the Swedes are well into lighting everything up. New Year is also good as they all go firework mental.

Spent Christmas, when I was younger in Coverlam (sp???).Was pretty cool, altho' I recall we got pretty shody presents as at the time The part of India we were in were lacking Toys R us and that sort of shopping. Think I got a wind up car, and some bouncy balls as well as a bucket and spade

went to benidorm for xmas a couple of years ago, was really really good. it was obviously different than being at home, but it was basically the same, except waking up to sunshine oin xmas days a bit odd but enjoyed it all the same
