The cynic amongst us might think that the BCCI had no interest in ever playing this test. If you recall months back, they asked the ECB if the tests could all be moved forward a week due to the IPL, to which the ECB refused due to tickets already being sold and arrangements made.

Surely they have to forfeit the series if the refuse to compete when fit? Testing available, they could all take a PCR test today and get the result tomorrow.

India never wanted this Test and tried to get it cancelled or moved a long time ago when the IPL was rescheduled. Low and behold they’ve used covid as a convenient excuse to do so despite none of their players having it.

No players have Covid. No excuse to cancel. India want to refuse to play to safeguard their IPL contracts and then not to forfeit the game as well. All this costs English cricket a small fortune.

As I understand it, the ECB bribed the counties into agreeing to The Hundred by promising every county over £1 million each year for 5 years.
With the India Test cancelled, is the ECB solvent? Can it honour those payments to the Counties?
In my view, the Counties were completely stitched up. Their fixtures have been so ruined that I cannot see how any sensible person would now fork out for an annual County Membership subscription for 2022.
The Counties' future does not lie in TV contracts with Sky and the BBC. It lies in live streaming County Championship matches, T20 games and the 50-over competition - with fixtures arranged in the summer in a sensible schedule.

England Men's 2022 home international fixtures announced. www.ecb.co.uk/england/men/news/2245711/england-mens-2022-home-international-fixtures-announcedNothing in May. TWELVE white ball games scheduled for July. 6 of them against India! No Test Cricket between 27th June and 17th August. Big gap between the last ODI on 31st July and the 1st Test v S. Africa on 17th August - presumably to accomodate The Hundred. T20 Finals Day on July 16th - so no England players involved. As usual - utterly ridiculous schedule. 'The ECB remains in discussions with key stakeholders regarding the 2022 England Women’s home schedule and the structure of the men’s and women’s domestic seasons'. I remain totally pessimistic as to the outcome of this.

India prepared for this Test series properly. They came here for the Test championship in June and then spent about 6 weeks here practicing red ball cricket prior to the start of the Test series in early August.
By contrast the England players were involved in ODI/T20 cricket against Sri Lanka and Pakistan during June/July and then played a couple of games for their Hundred teams before commencing the Test series.
This is the schedule that was put in place by the ECB and, in contrast to their public statements, it shows how they actually prioritise things.

Presumably April and May will be solely county championship, June and July T20 blast and county championship, with the one day cup running parallel to the hundred through the school holidays again, then back to the championship. The other option would be to intersperse the one day cup in April and May and play a round or two of county championship alongside the hundred.

Not a fan of this big gap of Test cricket in the height of summer that is becoming normalised, especially given our best weather is regularly June and July now. August hasn't been much of a summer month for donkeys, and whilst September is usually nice, the nights draw in a lot for bad light
Surely for internationals you could start do White ball May Tests June against 1 team, then tests July/August, white ball August/September against another team.
Oh hang on, I forgot about the Hundred...

The India players signed a letter at midnight on Thursday telling their board they would not be playing the fifth Test at Old Trafford due to fears over covid, Telegraph Sport understands.
After a day of frantic calls and meetings between the players, the BCCI and the ECB, the match was cancelled at the 11th hour on Friday with thousands of fans already in Manchester and heading to the ground.
This has Kohli's fingerprints all over it.

Senior India players met last night and despite reassurances from the ECB about the covid protocols, decided to stand together with many fearing a further spread of covid could prevent them from playing in the IPL which restarts in the UAE on Sept 19.
There are now high-level talks between the ECB and BCCI over whether the match was forfeited by India.
The row over forfeiture or cancellation has huge ramifications for the ECB. If the match was forfeited by India then the ECB are covered by insurance for losses of around £40m, in the same way they would be if the game was forfeited for the death of a monarch or a terrorist attack.
But if the match was cancelled by Covid, the ECB are not covered by insurance leaving them with a huge hole in their finances, a year after losing £16m.
The BCCI are refusing at this stage to forfeit the match and accept liability. It would mean the series is a 2-2 draw.
The matter could end up being resolved by the International Cricket Council’s dispute resolution committee.

I see India are talking about rearranging the game, presumably an add on to their white ball tour next summer. Making a complete mockery of the sport.

Presumably India heard the same rumours I did about Shagger being back in the eleven. This late cancellation has serious implications for test cricket and that's the best you can come up with? How about you post something of value on this thread for a change?

The BCCI holds all the power and money in the sport, primarily as a result of the IPL, they can more or less do what they want.

From bits I've read, if India forefit, the series is drawn and insurance pays out for some of the losses so ECB are happy(er). If India don't forefit it and its deemed to have been cancelled as a result of covid then insurers do not pay out and presumably India would win the series. Admittedly this is taken from social media so take with a pinch of salt.

'However, it is understood the BCCI did ask the players to keep their bags ready to fly out to the UAE for the IPL well ahead of the scheduled departure date of September 15, when the bulk of the India and England players were to board charter flights to join their franchises.
The key concern for the BCCI was it did not want the IPL to be impacted considering it is starting in nine days' time. With that in mind the BCCI discussed cancelling the final Test, but the ECB is understood to have made it clear that it would interpret any refusal to play as a forfeiture. The BCCI was keen to avoid such a scenario, as not only would it see England square the series, but it could expose the BCCI to claims of lost revenue from broadcasters and the venue. Lost revenue could, it is thought, total up to GBP 30 million'.
Cricinfo.
ECB's Tom Harrison: 'It is unfair to blame the IPL. There is no agenda here'. Yeah, sure.

The rules for the ongoing edition of the World Test Championship allow for matches to be cancelled - rather than forfeited - if there is “significant impact” from Covid-19.
The result of a legal dispute could come down to how the dispute resolution committee interpret the “significant impact” clause in the ICC's Covid regulations.

The Counties have all had their fixtures ruined this season. The County Championship games were relegated to the margins of the season. The 50-over games were abruptly turned into a 2nd XI competition. The Counties played no cricket at the height of summer while the wretched Hundred was taking place.
I cannot see why any sane person would want to renew an annual subscription for a County Cricket Club membership. I no longer am a Member of Worcestershire CCC.
But will the counties now get the million plus annual payments they were promised by the ECB? The ECB has drained its reserves in launching The Hundred.

India were keen to stress the cancellation was due to Covid-19, something which would see the match officially abandoned under the ICC’s regulations for the World Test Championship. Harrison however said it was a result of “serious concerns over the mental health and well being of one of the teams” and this, in fact, differs from a cancellation caused directly by the virus. This semantic argument appears to stem from the ECB’s desire to seek an insurance payout for the estimated £10m in lost ticket sales and hospitality – the belief is that a Covid-19 outbreak would not see this covered – and, in terms of the result of the match also, this belief is underpinned by all 20 Indian squad players testing negative on the eve of the match. It is clear the ECB intends to hold its counterparts at the Board of Control for Cricket in India to their promise of a rescheduled Test – either a standalone fixture or the completion of this series – and possibly next year, when Virat Kohli’s team is visiting England for limited-overs cricket. Doing so would see the ECB avoid losing around £30m in broadcast money from Sky, BBC, Sony in India and other overseas rights holders. If not, a governing body that was hit with a £16.5m loss last year, and has seen reserves that sat as high as £73m in 2016 drop to just £2m, would be facing further financial hardship. www.theguardian.com/sport/2021/sep/10/england-v-india-fifth-test-called-off-covid-concerns-old-trafford

The selection of the Test team since Ed Smith left has gone from quite bad to quite shocking. They continually misread pitches, Moeen Ali is dropped, then recalled, then vice-captain. Leach is in, then out, then left without a game anywhere. Woakes plays no Tests for a year (he was not selected for 5 matches when fit). Bairstow is just a batsman, then he is a keeper, then he is not, then he is, then he was expected to play at Old Trafford instead of a batsman (Pope) who out-batted him. Our bowling in Australia was to be based on pace but now it is height (although allowances have to be made for the injuries suffered). Someone needs to get a grip and have an overall strategy as this has awful echoes of late 1980s English Test cricket.

And we have the County Championship bookended to the start/end of season.
It's sadly all about white ball cricket during the height of summer and its going to be the same in 2022.
