I was pleased to see that ‘Shuggie Bain’ won, it’s a terrific book. Strangely it was the only one on the short list I was aware of. Heard an interview with the author on R4 and he sounded interesting Hope it’s better than previous Scottish winner, I couldn’t get on with James Kelman’s book a few years ago

Only half way through but yes, not a lot of laughs but really engaged with the characters. I a punt on buying 2 contenders, the other I have finished is Real Lives by Brandon Taylor. Not recommended.

Comfortably in my top 20 books for the year, so certainly an argument to be made for it being a worthy winner.

I have read Shuggie Bain and one other book on the shortlist (The New Wilderness). Shuggie Bain is a brilliant novel - beautifully written but almost painful to read given the subject matter of alcoholism. A worthy winner and obviously written from the author's personal experience as it does not seek to romanticise or patronise the working class as so many novels do.
