I'm with you on that one, Peter Broadbent oozed real vlass, still can't figure out how we managed to secure his services, probably because of Arthur Rowley I'd imagine, he had so much time on the ball, certainly my favourite town player of all time.

Still cant believe how the hell we got Gerry daly.what a player he was He did jokingly tell me that it was because he had heard rumours that Steve Ogrizovic fancied himself as a bit of a snooker player, and Gerry decided to come here to challenge him🤣! I saw a lot of him in those days, and he was without doubt the finest snooker player to play in the Shrewsbury league; he could have, I believe, been a professional, if that had been his choice, but luckily for us, football won out.

Back to the last forty years - just no one beats Luke Rogers for sheer joyful goal scoring!

Hmmm....nice to have a good positive topic for once.
I think it would be easier to pick defenders or midfielders as stand out over the years than Strikers as we’ve never been a team with consistent ‘top’ scorers in our side, possibly 1 ever 10 years maybe....think the Peterborough and Pompey sides! They have top goalscorer a nearly ever year.
My two pence worth would say for natural finishers then difficult to look past Carl Griffiths, such a fox in the box. For skill and class has to be Holty but mention for Jemson in fits and starts, if he could be bothered he was a class above, think Everton. Also notably mentions for McGinlay and Wayne Clarke.

Another name.... George Boardman was another of my personal favourites.... one of the famed Scottish contingent, along with Bobby Ross and Eric Brodie....

We've had some good goalscorers, but Holt was an absolute animal.
only player I've ever seen nail a defender, swing in an inch perfect cross, and head it in himself, before getting a second yellow for taking his shirt off and jumping in the crowd.
Now my memory might be playing tricks on me and that didn't quite happen like that, but he's the only player I've known where it doesn't actually sound impossible...

Personally loved Jemson. Every time he got the ball you just knew he could do something special if he could be arsed.
Lee Steele scored 1 in 3 for us and I believe was loved at Oxford City, our opponents in the cup.
John McGinlay right up there with the best we've had
Great, positive, thread!

Agree about Jemson, great footballing brain and knew all the dark arts too so could be great to lead the line. The problem was his attitude and arrogance, he seemed to enjoy arguing/moaning with people. Regarding Steele, a rare bit of positivity during a very bleak era. However personally not someone I can put forward as I hold a grudge and he threatened me for closing a car door on him when I was 15!
